It was Hayfield Bonanza chunky and tumbled autumn. It’s lovely and soft but it wasn’t the best to knit with . It split quite a bit.

That's lovely. I need to have a go at a garment, just not the best at finishing things!

I find there’s an awful lot of jeopardy in a garment! Will it fit? Will it suit me? Will I even wear it?

If you move to a top down construction the fit jeopardy is much reduced..you will probably need to switch to knitting in the round for top down designs, but it allows you to try on as you go.
There’s a few tips to learn to modify the fit, but nothing complicated.
And ..no seaming at the end.
I still do the conventional knitting flat pieces and sewing them together, but judging the fit is so tricky.

Yes I’ve made a few garments and do wear them, and they’ve all been top down. The crochet one was quite tricky, I should probably have made the size down but the yoke was very complicated and I’d already redone a significant part of it! I prefer my knitwear quite fitted which doesn’t particularly help!
