That's gorgeous, GM! Almost inspired me to get the hooks out of the drawer.

I have hooks aplenty (inherited) and several *how to* books and leaflets, maybe I could try to teach myself again

It's in a beginner's crochet book. Crochet a circle from a chain of 2, using double crocket stitch; increase by 6 stitches on each round - add into every stitch on R1, every other on R2, every third on R3 etc until every sixteenth stitch on R16 when there are 102 stitches (I wasn't far off....) 1 row of dc into the back loop Then dc into both loops each round until it measures 5". 1 row of dc into the front loop to start the foldover 5 rows of dc into both loops.
It's very dense and holds itself up nicely. I always thought of crochet as being lacey and floppy. This is a revelation!

I've just been on You Tube and found out that a double crochet stitch in the UK is different to the American version. I did the UK version.

I have a collection of balls I made from old t shirts, I was going to hook a rug one day! I still might! Right off to knit a handwarmer! Been in a bag for ages as I had other stuff that needed doing but someone who had a pair a few years ago has lost hers and messaged me to buy another pair! Gives me an excuse to watch tv and knit during the day! 😂

Thanks GM! In that case, it'll be single crochet for me...as I'm more familiar with those terms. I learned how to crochet as a child...same with knitting.

What size hook and type (weight) of yarn did you use?

As a child I was taught how to crochet a square using basic shell stitch but had no idea there was so much more that you could do. My nan, mum and auntie all did knitting and taught us how to knit and purl. Being left-handed, but taught by right-handed folk has made it a bit more challenging than it maybe needed to be. I'm enjoying widening my yarn experience
