Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

I was taken through the recording with an adviser - I think that's probably quite important for the feedback process.

Just to update, I have been offered a job as a a Quality Engineer, in fact, scrub that, I have been offered two jobs as a Quality Engineer, both with medical device companies. In the end it was a simple decision, both were good jobs but one is walking distance from my home and the other is a 90 minute drive each way every day.

Just on a note of optimism for any current job seekers, I had been looking for about 6 months and had been close to a couple of job offers (down to last 2 or 3 candidates twice) then nothing for about 4 months. Then a recruitment agency got me an interview for a job vacancy in Cork then out of the blue a local firm called me (my CV had been on file with them for over 6 months). A whirlwind of three interviews each in both places in 3 weeks followed then a job offer for the local firm that I happily accepted and when I informed the other Company that I was no longer interested they personally phoned me to ask me how much they would need to offer me to change my mind and come to them as they had just prepared a job offer for me.

So don't give up and when companies say they have your CV on file, sometimes they do still intend to look at it when the time is right.

That's brilliant news Woffy. It's obviously worth persevering.

I have 2 applications submitted and one almost ready to go. I want to call the service and get some more info before I submit as it may mean a wee tweak to the application. Luckily they are all with local authorities and use the same system which saves most of your details. 2 of them would mean relocating :-o

Can anyone on here help me with a work thing please.

My contract has been temporary and now we're in discussions about making it permanent. I don't yet know if there's a set salary structure, so how would I find out how much the job I do should be paid? Someone doing a similar job in another department made a throwaway comment a few weeks ago "Well they pay us enough" but I don't know if she would know what salary I'm on. I suppose it'd be rude to ask hers ... ? I'm on £22k which I really struggle on and would be unhappy if someone appointed a few weeks after me was on a higher wage.

It's certainly crazily busy and there's potential for me to take on extra work in the future, but I'm not sure how to negotiate around this and potential pay rises.

When I visited head office, there seemed to be 2 people doing the job I do (there are 2 parts to my role + an extra person in another dept to support). These 2 people were surprised that I did both things and asked how I managed it. Again, for that reason, I want to make sure I get paid a reasonable amount, but obviously don't want to price myself out of a job.

RS - Great news. I suggest that if you know anyone, you ask a recruitment agency what the going rate for your role is. They generally have a very good feel for the market. If you don't know anyone, then Fmail me your job details and I'll ask one of my contacts for you.

If your current organisation wants to take you permanent then this is the one point where you will have the upper hand. They want and need you :-)

Make sure they make the first move and come up with an offer. Don't say to them ' well this is what i think I want.' Whatever they offer you politely reject it, sound a bit disappointed and say 'Well I was looking for a bit more than that really'. In 95% of cases they will offer you more and if they don't then you probably can assume that they really don't have any room to manoeuvre. No one will think less of you for negotiating and actually they are more likely to think you are a soft touch if you take the first amount offered.

Good luck

Thanks CStar. I do have a contact at a recruitment agency; she recently added me on LinkedIn. I'll give her a try. She works for the agency who appointed the girl in the other department who made the comment about pay.

Just out of interest, what do you do CStar?

Hello folks :) I wondered if anyone here can help me with a few questions. I am applying for a job and the contract states that it is 'open ended' which I take to mean essentially a permanent job, but is that the case? What does open ended mean legally if its not permanent? Why don't they just write permanent?

Secondly, the job description states the job is 9am-5pm Mon - Fri, but with some requirements for the odd weekend/evening work - what I would be worried about was the line between some requirement and them asking me to do it all the time as basically whilst I would be happy to do the odd evening/weekend, i really don't want that to be a regular thing as I do stuff at that time. Is there any way of approaching this with them without sounding as though I am not keen/without causing them to chuck my job app in the bin? :)

Thanks folks

A contract means that they don't have to pay you holiday pay or sick pay, or NI etc. It also means that they can end the contract with minimal notice. Make sure you're paid sufficient to cover this, as it needs to cover your income tax etc.

As far as the evenings & weekends, I'd ask about the frequency. Just say that you want to be aware of the commitment required.
