A well crafted 1 pager can be impressive, but it's harder to pull off.

More than 2 pages is unnecessary in the UK, with the possible exception of an appendix listing specialist qualifications, or publications.

The 5+ page ones always turn up on Friday afternoons and suggest inability to communicate effectively, although we're obliged to read them impartially.

I've given mine a significant rewrite.

Where I had an "Education" section, I've put an "Achievements" section, with dates and summaries of what I think are the key achievements in my professional and voluntary life. Qualifications appear in this as relevant, school history at bottom. Then employment becomes a simple list with dates, including my important voluntary roles.

I still have a personal statement at the bottom, but it's shorter.

Achievements sound good DG.Sticking in a few numbers adds credibility, e.g. "reduced costs by 17.1%", or whatever.

I need to pick your brain about references, as well.

Advert for a job I'm just about to apply for requests references, either from my last two jobs or the last three years.

My situation's possibly a little odd. I've worked at the same employer for 14 years, in two completely different departments, with a 6 month career break in between. Basically I resigned from teaching as I no longer had confidence in my ability to do the job, and returned to the same employer to do something totally different 6 months later.

Do I name my line manager in both jobs as a referee?

What happens - they said they'd ask for references prior to taking up the post? What would an employer divulge at that time that would be prejudicial? I don't have any skeletons in my closet, incidentally...

DG. yes, just use your line managers. There is nothing wrong in changing roles. Really all referees are used for is to provide some back up to what you tell your new prospective employer. If you are decent and honest (which I'm sure you are), then there should be no issues at all.

I would give whoever you think will be most sympathetic.

No way to know for sure what will happen, but most employers don't seem to attach much importance to references. When I have acted a referee, more often than not I've never been contacted, even though the person was appointed.

Some organisations insist that reference go through the HR department and provide little more than confirmation of the dates the person worked there.

Just catching up... Red squirrel how are you getting on? Has it calmed down at all at your work? My work is less busy for me as they have hired another training coordinator. I really like her which is good cos we work closely together and share an office. She is only 24 so makes me feel old!
