''We could work so much better as a team if we could review how we work, where we store centralised information and allocate the correct jobs to the people with the expertise without affecting personal development too much. I'd be happy to put in an unpaid weekend to do this but don't want to make that sort of suggestion as people are obviously busy (I am!) and some have kids.''

Suggest it! It sounds like you have a lovely team there and you are all suffering under the pressure of too muchb work. Sounds like the business is successful and growing, so maybe a review of workload and division of it amongst current staff is in order, perhaps deciding to employ at least one more if not two, as it seems erecntly some manpower has been lost?

RS I have more to say on the matter, but it sounds like the following could be effective:
when someone asks you to re-prioritise to put new work first, only do it on the basis that they sit down and explain the change in priorities to you.

It sounds like the company is addicted to urgency. It can be changed, but its a very stressful environment to be in.

It exists at my new job too. I'm going to challenge it subtly over the first month and if still no change then challenge it forcefully. Its not a good or productive way to do business! I just need to get the run of the place first mind ;)

Curly, I like what you are saying: the company is addicted to urgency! My ex business partner is like that and it caused so much unnecessary stress as well as making me less efficient, having to interrupt things I was doing/focussing on to do more urgent jobs in between!

Hi folks - I really appreciate all your input on this.

I had a chat to my manager and they were really understanding (they're up against it stupidly too - more so than me). The big boss has been flying in and out like the proverbial blue-assed mofo this week too. There is one chap who is v laid-back. He spends a lot of the day on the 'phone to clients, solicitors etc and I guess he gets his work done that way, along with one-liner emails. I'm not sure if the rest of us are addicted to urgency; I need to think about that.

Curly - my boss has said she'll look at my priorities on a daily basis, so that puts her in charge of my workload priorities. She has been getting annoyed at all the interruptions I have and has taken steps to try to lessen some of that. So that's all good!

I have this CV, right? It's OK, but it's mostly related now to a job I don't want to do, and further back, a job that I hated. I've been encouraged to stagnate in the role I'm doing, so don't have any professional development in some time.

I'd like to make more of my voluntary work, which gives me a great in in terms of multi-agency working, project management, that sort of thing, and also gives me a clearly defined senior(ish) managerial role which in my current employed world, I won't get.

All I've ever done with the CV is edit it adding and taking away as necessary, and I don't think it shows me in a good light. How best can I get advice on rewriting it?

I write ever cv for ever role I apply for. The best thing you can do is make sure your skills profile matches the job description and use the covering letter to explain any mismatches and why you want the job.

I know it takes time, but it impresses employers and is really good interview prep too. :)

For advice on specifics go to a good employment agency in your field and talk to them and ask. They will know what your likely employers are looking for. Not a generic agency though, they are shite in general...

Good luck.

Part of the problem is, I no longer know what field I'm interested in :-(

mole-thing enterprises provides recruitment and section services to large organisations. I get to see thousands of CVs, mostly not as good as they could be. Here's what gets my attention:

A well-written, short profile that addresses the skills asked for.

Well laid out, easy to assimilate quickly.

Makes it clear what you achieved. I'm not very interested in what you were responsible for.

Brief. It's an advertisement for you, not your life story.

No more than 2 pages long in total.
