bbc.co.uk There's so little rowing news in the media that this podcast (an interview with Helen Glover) stood out. Also if you go to the "More Episodes" tab there's a previous episode interviewing Steve Redgrave, which is what I had on my headphones as I did my 2k on Saturday. He's an inspiration. I've not listened to the Helen Glover one yet but I bet it's good. |

Nice work on the 2k test Nellers & Fenners. I will probably throw a test in in the next week or two. See if I can sneak under 6:50. Hard to know if I have done enough on the erg to even maintain where I was at though. I have introduced some cycling though, which should carry over. |

General strength and fitness at your level can go a long way on the rower, Foppotee. I reckon you'll be fine.

Royal Flush Negative Splits. Excellent work, and a very strong finish by the look of that power figure.

theguardian.com For many years I lived in Reading, where the Thames isn't huge but it's big enough for some hefty vessels. Never been into rowing on the water but on my riverside runs I used to watch the boats from the local clubs scooting up and down. To think that a river that size is so polluted with shit that to take a dip is to risk your health is not good. |

In the late 90s I rowed in Head of the River VIII (with a novice crew) and IV (in a more experienced lightweight quad) events there, which use the boat race course. The river was historically polluted and we took every precaution we could, but of course we often got river water on us. I was lucky but every time, a few of our crew would come down with a bug in the days afterwards. It can't have been pleasant for those that trained on that stretch. In later years the Thames was cleaned up quite a bit and made safer, but it's gone backwards now |

When I was canoeing in the 80s and early 90s the rivers were already pretty hazardous if you took a swim. Holme Pierrepont where the National Watersports Centre is (Regatta lake for rowing and sprint canoe that was the only venue until Dorney was built for 2012) built a slalom course fed from the Trent and it was notorious for causing stomach issues if you took a swim there. I paddled the Thames a few times in races and it was filthy. Luckily never fell in so don't have any direct experience but I wouldn't have wanted to have to swim in it at all. The Severn and the Wye were the only rivers I raced that I thought looked "clean" on the bits I paddled them. The Soar in Leicester where I lived back then was disgusting. We trained downstream of the city and you could smell the oil and dirt in it. I'm not sure how that report is a surprise to anyone who spends time on or near waterways unfortunately. |

It's been a while since I did my favourite hard workout, 15 x 1 minute go 1 minute recover (the "half hour of power"). I got to see some numbers on the PM that I don't often see and I think faster overall than last time so happy with that. Certainly got the old ticker working.
