Gordon I agree with Nellers & Muttley that you might be using the straps to pull yourself back to the catch on your recovery, below is a good (exaggerated) Rowalong video highlighting the issue and showing what to do about it. You might also be using the straps to end your drive (your pull stroke) rather than your core, so on a warm up try rowing with your feet out of the straps, you'll probably have to slow your pace and stroke rate as you'll feel like you're going to shoot off the end of the rail, but it'll promote good technique without relying on the foot straps. Obviously you'll want to be strapped in at higher rates, but rowing strapless at lower rates can certainly help with technique. Another Rowalong video below re rowing strapless... |

Did you catch any of the “Versa Challenge” event Jef? Sort of a rowing Pentathlon. Very entertaining and Cam Buchan in there for GB.

Thank you for that video about strapless, Craggy. I have tried it in the past and failed utterly. I ought to take another look and have another go.

He is quite good at this rowing game though, Mutters. Next event on the livestream I think is the Women's Versa "Pace and Power" event. No idea what that actually is and that's kind of the point I think. |

Yeah give it another go Muttley, the first time I tried it I remember letting go of the handle with one hand because it felt like I was going to shoot off the back, but I do all my steady stuff strapless now, it's definitely corrected a few flaws such as leaning back too far and pulling myself back with the straps on the recovery.

So it's a 20 minute piece with a stroke rate changing each minute according to audience voting in the arena. Points for stroke rate accuracy and pace consistency, and also for longest distance in any 1 minute segment. A bit complicated bit quite a tough test. |

Enjoyed watching the rowing champs yesterday, I thought they focused too much on the virtual contestants though rather than the arena contestants.

I think you're right, Craggy, although it was amusing me to see the strangest home set up. Did you see the Japanese chap that looked like he was set up in a Travelodge room?

Ah! It's not random stroke rate changes. It's a rate change ladder between 18-37spm, and the audience voted for starting at 37 and dropping by 1 every minute for 20 minutes.
