Starting is the hardest part SK. You've got much more chance of getting back to that pace once you've started training than if you don't for sure.

I don't think rest metres count on the C2 log, but sessions imported onto Fetch from the log do seem to include them. I'm not at all sure how that works.

A smidge over 10k in total for me this evening: 4 x 10 min stroke ladders and a bit of a warm down. It's the first time I've deliberately strayed above r18 since about mid-November I think. It felt pretty good to be giving it some yam!

I’m intrigued by the r18 work. I find it difficult to row at that rate.

Rowing at 16, 18, 20 takes quite a bit of practice to get the rhythm but it’s worth it for learning to generate a more powerful drive. It pays off later when you pick the rate up and chase the shorter distances.

I do most of my rowing without straps. That helps get the low rate stroke rate/technique right. Only add straps when moving up to 28 s/m and beyond.

I need to do more strapless rowing I think. I've learned to rely on the straps too much.

SK: Yes, what Jef says about it taking time to get into the low rate groove but it seems to help when I then pick the rate up a bit. I do think it can be affected by leg length too. At 5'11'' I can get away with it. I guess at 6'plus it gets easier, and harder going in the other direction.

I’m 5’9” - may give it a go as a way of focusing more on technique.

Thank you both!

My tip would be take it down 2 beats at a time.

What I mean is if your "easy rowing" is currently at, say, 24 don't try to go to 18 next session. Drop to 22 and get the feel for that, then 20, then 18 over the course of a week or so.

SK, I’ve definitely found the lower rate work helpful. When I first started out, my default s/r was somewhere around 30 but I’m now comfortable sitting at 19/20 without it feeling too stop/start. But like Nellers suggested, I think I worked my way down a couple of strokes at a time.

I’ve been trying to increase stroke length a bit recently, as I think I’d gone from leaning too far back to rowing short and now need to settle somewhere in the middle.

I haven’t found much guidance on this, though. I guess it depends a bit on relative arm / torso/ leg lengths, but as a rough guide, what does anyone else aim for? I’m 5’10” and can hit 1.30m at a slow rate but that drops to 1.20m as the rate increases. Does that sound about right?

That's about what I see CW, in terms of stroke length. At r18 I'm about 1.30, and ass the rate climbs or fatigue sets in it drops. Very high rate shortens my stroke.

I don't think that's necessarily how it should be but that's certainly what I'm seeing.

SK when I first started doing r18 I found it difficult to keep it that low so I used a metronome app for a couple of weeks, it definitely helped.

My stroke length at low rate is also nudging 1.30 and drops as the rate climbs, I probably can't improve on that as I'm only 5'8", I've seen some of the big boys mention stroke lengths of well over 1.50😲

The stroke length stat is interesting.

I’m 5’9” ( just ) and my average drive length is 1.44 metres but I know from filming that I don’t have excessive lean. . though looking at yourselves, maybe I do.
