I’d stick with what the filming has told you, Jef! I have tight hamstrings and short Achilles’ tendons, so was struggling to get any forward lean, and also have relatively short arms, that will all chop a bit off the length at the catch. I’ve tried dropping my foot position, which has helped a lot, but I suspect my s/l will always be on the short side for someone my height. But it sounds like I’m in roughly the right ball park now, which is good. I thought I’d ask because I saw a comment elsewhere from someone who is 5’4” saying their average was 1.15m |

I hadn’t thought about the forward motion. I can bend from the waist and put my palms flat on the floor straight legged. When rowing I often touch the fan cage with the handle but still have my shins at 90 degrees. Not an ideal stroke though. |

Sounds like you've got flexibility to spare! I'm totally the opposite - have to work very hard just to near the floor with my knees bent, though it's much improved now I don't really run any more.

I’m 6’0 and stroke length is around 1.30 - 1.36. My flexibility is poor. I try not to lean too far forward and also not take the shins past vertical. |

Is stroke length recorded or just displayed during the row? Played with stroke rate tonight. I set it up for 200m intervals with no rest and aimed to row each 1000 at 20-22-24-22-20. Not entirely successful but in my current shape I’m not unhappy with a sub-25 min 5000m with an average rate of 22spm. My happy rate is about 24. Terrible flexibility and a big tendency to over stretch at the catch. |

PS I use ErgData and can see a stroke rate field but can’t find the data for logged rows.

It doesn't record it, SK. It just displays it as you row. I think there might be some sort of clever website that can do the download of that additional data but I've never bothered.

Ah OK I'll pay attention to it. I usually just chuck the phone on the bed and ignore it until I've finished. Maybe I need a fancy thing to attach the phone to the erg...

amazon.co.uk That's the one that gets good recommendations, SK, but I've got an older one and don't see any need to replace it with one that's marginally better. |

I’m watching the conversation on strike rate with interest - when I started it felt most natural at around 28, but I’ve been trying to gradually reduce it over time and am usually in the 22-24 region now. Also, they’re selling phone holders in the Concept2 shop for just £1: shop-uk.concept2.com No idea how the quality compares, but it does the job for me. |
