Velociraptor
Promise myself I'll use it more in future and put it back where it was.

(I know, wrong answer!)

I think you have to see it as ‘that money has been spent and whether I wear it or not I’m not getting it back’.

Trying to persuade my fiance to get rid of several suits he never wears, is unlikely to, but cost a lot. However they’re not worth much now as even on Vinted he won’t recoup much more and the hassle level is high. They’re still in the spare room wardrobe

The combining has already happened, over the last 8 or 9 years! Good point.

I think that jacket is going to charity: the "I'm not getting the money back" idea resonated with me.

Thanks everyone.

Shades
If I have an item that I just can't decide whether to get rid if I put it in open box and put the box in a prominent place.

After a week of walking past the box several times a day I'm 99% likely to get rid of it.

The feeling of getting rid of stuff seems to quickly outweigh the feeling of sunk cost.

(Says she, in a cluttered house…!)

I read once something like you have to forget what you spent on an item as that moneys long gone.

Not that it helps much

Help advice and support for declutterers

Special May Challenge

theminimalists.com

".... This month, each of you must get rid of one thing on the first day. On the second, two things. Three items on the third. So forth, and so on. Anything can go! Clothes, furniture, electronics, tools, decorations, etc. Donate, sell, or trash. Whatever you do, each material possession must be out of your house—and out of your life—by midnight each day."
