When I found it all a bit insurmountable I decided to just do one box/drawer/shelf. If that was all I had time for or all I did at least I’d done something. More often than not it got me enthused to keep going.

I found moving to a smaller house with less storage was the best way to focus. And if you find something you’d forgotten you had you don’t really need to keep it.

We moved in 8yr ago today, then had a baby a month later. I struggle with letting go of the things that are Before Child life, but I want to be current, like hobbies. A time management issue as well as clutter.

Next week, I'll be doing some of this...the problem is I can justify keeping a lot of things, though there are some things that I can dispose of...surplus to requirement. The other thing I'll be doing is rolling my skeined yarns into balls...so I can actually start knitting things.

My office is in desperate need of a sort. It never really got the post-move treatment and has now become a dumping ground. I’ve been planning to do it for weeks but hints keep getting on the way. I must apply my own principle I think!

Thank you all for your thoughts and advice, its good to know I'm not alone in this... its blooming hard work. Mostly its time to fit everything in and its also having time to focus on it properly.

I foolishly decided it was possible to decorate 3 spares rooms in one hit, so everything out one room into another, then onto 2nd then finally last. All that has happened is a lot of crap that was in all the rooms has expanded to the whole bloody house. I have so much stuff I don't need, but guilt makes me keep it (gifts from long past relatives, things from childhood and even my mum adding to the problem buying me little trinkets) but also I have an obsession with cookery books and Good Food Magazine. I started going through the magazines taking out recipes I like and make from time to time, but still lots to go at. I've decided I can now put these in my GF online account but will also take time to go through and add them.

But we have a lot of things I need to eBay - not least the masses of Royal Dalton and Coalport figurines which belonged to my husband's aunt and I've been given task of selling them... no one wants them, but value says don't charity them.

I hate waste and adding to an already overwhelmed throwaway world, but I am getting to the point that for my own mental health I'm going to have to go with it. Our house is bigger than the last one but there is zero storage I want some storage built in as we decorate but then I fear it will encourage more hording of crap.

I have given myself a plan of doing one room, getting it straight and then move on to the next I can temporarily relocate the stuff and what cant find a final home will have to go.

ARGH all I want for Christmas is a tidy, calm and clutter free life....

Good luck GG!

Have you got a local auction house that would take the Royal Doulton? Or there are people that will eBay for you for a cut.

I was going to suggest a local auction house too.

I have my grandparents' wedding china from 1911 in a box in the spare room. I have nowhere to display it/keep it but I can't get rid of it.

Raptors Claws are coming to town
I have a recurrent conversation with my mum where she tells me that my grandmother's two half teasets, each missing one cup, are "worth a bomb" and I have to disillusion her. The two half teasets are now in my house. Tink once thought she wanted them. They were my grandmother's pride and joy. If I can find a local tearoom that does the oldie-worldie mixed crockery thing, I'll donate them.

".... This month, each of you must get rid of one thing on the first day. On the second, two things. Three items on the third. So forth, and so on. Anything can go! Clothes, furniture, electronics, tools, decorations, etc. Donate, sell, or trash. Whatever you do, each material possession must be out of your house—and out of your life—by midnight each day."
