Carpathius
People might recall my decluttering blog of ages ago, referencing T1's bedroom.
It has not improved, and she leaves for uni in two weeks.
The warning was given; either you sort through before you go, or I will do it.

I suspect I'm going to need strength. And bin bags.

Carps - you may want to deliver the bin bags now with the ultimatum - 'it's you or me'
3 piles
1) take to uni
2) dispose of
3) keep 'at home'
And challenge almost everything that's in pile 3 as 'if it's not in 1, then it goes in 2'

Ds1 spontaneously mucked out his bedroom last week when I was away, though my declutterer has had several turns at it over the last few years so it was mostly surface stuff even though it was everywhere. I agree that you deliver the bin bags, suggest a plan of action and then back off. She’s an adult! Though you might need to deploy the bin bags after she leaves if she leaves a big mess behind and it’ll attract rats...

On the same subject, when I was away for a week previously, ds1 cleaned the kitchen a few times and disposed of rubbish. I think maybe sometimes we need to not be there for them to actually do things!

I told ds1 that I need to go away for longer in future so that he can get even more done :)

Oh, she's been warned she needs to go through it. Many, many times. We have procured bins and boxes and she now has two weeks until she leaves with no sign of progress.

I think sometimes our nagging gets tuned out the more we do it.

And sometimes it just makes them dig their heels in and be less likely to do whatever it is we’re nagging them about. She’ll probably be motivated by needing to pack her clothes and stuff for uni. I seem to remember doing all that stuff at the very last minute when I was that age!

Yes, teenage time is different. I suspect she sees no need to do it before the afternoon before she goes. At the same time as, probably, delivering a list of the the things she needs to take ...

Boy Twin lands at Heathrow on the Friday morning after 3 weeks in Indonesia, we take him to Falmouth precisely 24 hours later. No shopping, sorting or packing of any description has been done. He may be going simply with clean pants and a toothbrush!

Meglet
I’ve done something I’ve been meaning to do all summer and take the unwanted pots from the garden (left by previous owners, unloved by me, dead plants) to the tip, along with a decrepit wooden table that was also here when I moved in.

Pretty please I managed that before I’d been here a year :-)

Next job is to dismantle the rotting half-height shed. But really need Teen 1 to go back to uni so there’s some space in the garage.

Good going Meglet!

I’ve freecycled 2 items and put 2 more on (they’ll go to the tip if no response). I’ve been meaning to do this for years so I’m pleased with the progress. Garage is a bit clearer so that’s good.

".... This month, each of you must get rid of one thing on the first day. On the second, two things. Three items on the third. So forth, and so on. Anything can go! Clothes, furniture, electronics, tools, decorations, etc. Donate, sell, or trash. Whatever you do, each material possession must be out of your house—and out of your life—by midnight each day."
