Also as I was trying to say the other day too: twitter.com (A caveat to the above - DON'T leave things on standby when you don't need to - that does lead to significant cost). |

The leaking gas thing is interesting: my hose to the bottle is perishing. Better get myself a new one!

Lowering the water temp does increase the risk of Legionella however. 49 degrees C at the tap seems to be the minimum recommended temp to prevent Legionella. |

We've switched to using the immersion heater on overnight 7.5p/kWh, and have lowered the output temperature on the boiler (gas) for heating. We're not using any heating atm so will have to see how that goes when the weather gets colder. We've also just replaced 40 year old patio doors in the living room with modern 28mm gap argon filled french doors. Savings calculations are complicated by son1 moving out just over a week ago: our electricity use last week was 65% of what it was the week before he moved!! |

Ergh, wow TR! I had a conflab with my water provider earlier today, as I got yet another bill... The other one was just over 4 months ago and I ham supposed to get one every 6 months. I feared they had become quarterly as the last one nearly doubled! Transpired it was estimated, based on last years over the same period, when I had concrete foundations and 3 slabs poured, and lots of cement mixed and a hedge transplanted and 2 mature trees planted... So it was way too high. Phew! I am back to normal bills as their price has barely risen. I was complimented on how little water I use and it was suggested they look into my rain garden, when I divert the water off the roof into the garden, and my soakaway as he said I should get a discount of surface water runoff ![]() |

um
Hanneke - yes, at least I did. Not a discount, but a flat fee I think. On the waste water side - we get water supply from Wessex, waste/drainage from (well, to) Southern. I think it was a flat rate standing charge. Just wrote and asked, and by aerial shots or whatever, they accepted all roof water went into soakaways. No back credit for the 20-30 years before I realised I could remove it. |

um
Just checked, Southern Water charge £25.90 annually for surface water drainage. They have an on-line rebate form.

I spent the first 20 of the nearly 30 years weve been here trying to tell anglia water that we have soakaways and asking for the rain water rebate. Filled in the same forms over and over, drawing diagrams as required. They deny receiving the forms each time and send me another copy. I gave up in the end, will see if they have an online form and if that won’t be ignored. |

Welsh Water says they send someone round to assess the situation. He thought I should be eligible for a discount already but easier to wait until ALL water goes into garden and soakaway.
