Proper first ride out today, loved it, although amazed how twitchy it was, feels like there is only a couple of postage stamp sized bits of rubber on the road, so I was probably a bit nervy.

But, didn't fall off or over, so that's a win :-)

Did 14 miles at an av speed of 16mph and don't feel anything like as tired as I would have done on my old bike so hoping I can get more frequent rides in. Lovely evening tonight, but I'm looking after the kids :-(

Maybe a Thursday commute...

I reckon theres plenty more speed to come Glenners :-)

Seat still needs to go up a little, and my saddle is very slippery, i might have to put velcro on it

If you're moving around on the saddle lots it might not be supporting you effectively...

Just tip it back a bit more. I use a spirit level to check the angle.

This may relate to something Winded was posting a while back.

I'm now using my old Giant Defy 5 as my commuter bike and when on lumpy urban roads it can be a bit jarring through the arms. Would fitting a carbon fibre stem make any sense?

I think the bigger issue is that (depending on the age of the Defy) - the 5 has alloy forks rather than carbon ones. I think a carbon stem will be quite stiff and quite short so may not make that much difference. On the other hand it is at more or less 90 degrees to the force of the bump coming to hit your hands so I guess the vectors resolve differently; someone on t'internet may have done the maths.

For not far off the price of a carbon stem you could get carbon forks - because they are longer a small extra amount of flex makes them quite comfy - that is the reason why all but base models of road bike usually come with them (even lots of steel framed ones). In contrast only very expensive bikes come with a carbon stem - it makes less difference per £ so it is only for the fast people really.

I very much doubt I'd bother though.

Winded, my initial enquiries had already taken me to the point where I'd realised a carbon stem was worth more than the bike is.

Chris (of Chris's Bikes) seemed to think replacing the forks wasn't worth the money either, back when I was discussing upgrading the groupset with him.

Bigger tyres on the giant to soak up them bumps?

Look at the bikes they use on the Roubaix

Also things like gel pads under the bar tape.

The roads round here destroy front wheels, shoulders and teeth for a laugh

Morning

Something for the old school and Hannake may find this interesting.

Time trialled on a 94.5 fixed gear last night. Warmed up with a lap of the course then mashed myself.

First time on the fixed since last August I think yet

Best power of the year so far.

Very strange climbing grinding 1 minute and spinning 140 the next (legs go daft as hr and power drops)
