A much better month for training! The first half of January was a write-off because of Covid, and the second half was fairly tentative. So February was about building fitness.
Here's January for comparison:
And here's February:
The HR graph tells the story. I was aiming to do most of my runs in the low intensity zones, trying to build up the grey and cyan sections. I ran 55% in these two zones in February; compared to just 32% in January. Average pace in both these zones fell too, which points towards me getting faster for the same level of effort = WIN Average beats per mile fell from 1416 in Jan to 1334 in Feb, and it'd be nice to see it regularly go sub-1300 in March.
My benchmark times are virtually identical across the two months - I'm just chugging out the miles to build fitness, so I don't mind one bit that these have not improved. I might start throwing in a bit of quicker stuff in March - or I might just keep on as I am as I feel I'm still picking up efficiency improvements.
Pleased to get a longest run of 10 miles - it felt like there was more in the tank too - but it was on the very flat canal path. And overall ascent of 694m is (I think) a record for me. I should really build an ascent leaderboard
Some potential pats on the back to contemplate for March:
1) get sub-1300 average beats per mile
2) 70% of mileage in Z0 and Z1
3) maybe get to HM distance once in the month
4) introduce a little bit of quicker running. Just a little.
5) do an OWS before the end of the month
6) get the bike out too. Even if just to look at.
7) DON'T GET INJURED BECAUSE I'M ENJOYING MYSELF.

Last year, our annual virtual challenge ran from March 27th to October 30th, coinciding with the start and end of British Summer Time. In the original 2021 challenge, we toured castles. In 2022, runners and walkers got a 700 mile route taking in various places of worship. Cyclists got a fairly traditional Land's End to John O'Groats. And swimmers got a 40 mile trip down the Thames.
I'd like to keep the same schedule for it i.e. March 26th to October 29th this year, which gives us a nice seven month window to make this a challenge for those who want to take part. That means the clock is ticking - we've got a month to get organised.
It would be great to:
1) get your suggestions for themes this year. I've already had a suggestion for a potential largely off-road route, which does sound good - although I also know that in previous years you've all enjoyed being able to check the StreetView image wherever you land each day - and that tends to be restricted to places where you can get a car. Perhaps the off-road parts could connect on-road parts, as you battle through the wilderness to find the next settlement? Or maybe you've got a completely different suggestion, like a coastal path (again, there'll be blank spots for StreetView) or Monopoly streets, or football grounds, or county tops, or branches of Greggs. What do you think?
2) get help plotting the route. Synge has very kindly plotted our routes for the last couple of years, and whilst he's happy to help out at a push, he's not unreasonably got other stuff on his plate. Offering to help doesn't necessarily mean doing the whole thing. Once we've established a theme, and picked some checkpoints, we could potentially divide these up. Thinking about it, the theme could even be 'mystery tour', where each volunteer has 50 miles to play with, and a start point.
3) a memento. I do like my coaster, but I've got two of them now, and can only drink one mug of tea at a time. Your suggestions for something to commemorate the challenge would be great. It generates a bit of very welcome cash for the Fetch hamsters.
Now *you* say something

I've made some updates to our hills and trig point collector since I launched it last Thursday. If you've not spotted this previously, you just sign up, and check the map for collectible stuff:
fetcheveryone.com/points.php
Here are the updates:
1) Visited and unvisited points now use different colours (red and grey respectively).
2) Trig points and hills now have different icons (trig symbols and hill symbols respectively).
3) On each of the items you've collected, there's a 'Show location' button next to each thing you've collected, which will zoom the map to it.
4) There's also a whole page for each item now. It shows the height (for hills only); a small map; a list of people who have visited this point; and the collections this item appears in. Click the titles in your list of collected items, or look for the link in the popup when you click one on the map.
5) The hills and trigs are now available as a layer to the route plotter, and on your training entries. The layer is currently called 'Points'.
6) The lists under the map now show all available collections, not just the ones you've begun - so you can have a good nosey round.
7) The collection headers now include a progress indicator e.g. (1/2160 collected)
8) Each collection now has a short description to explain its criteria.
9) I've added the Ethels as a collection.
--
The answer to the blog title is "A shit name for a fun game". Happy to take your suggestions for a better name for this challenge

If you use our route plotter, you'll have seen that the 'Follow roads' option was not acknowledging bridleways (the green dotted lines on the map). This was a bug with the routing service we use. Some countries do not allow foot traffic on bridleways (unless those feet belong to a horse), so they were being rejected as an option. Anyway... that looks like it's fixed now.
--
Finished my swimming for the month, with a new record for me of 12.3mi, and a longest swim of 3.1mi in two hours I think the top 9 layers of skin have been burned off by the chlorine, but otherwise all good. I only need to double the distance of my longest swim now to complete my event in July

Off the back of yesterday's fun with Wainwright collecting, and all your fabulous suggestions, I've expanded my horizons!
Today I've grabbed a list of 21,000 British hills from the British Hill Index website. They are from various collections e.g. Munros, Simms, Dodds, Furths, Cuthberts, and even Synges They don't appear to include the Ethels unfortunately - but hopefully I can revisit that when I have the data. And some hills appear in multiple collections as you probably already know.
I also found a database of over 14,000 trig points - so I've added those as a collection too.
I've created an updated more generalised version of the Wainwright code that will check you against all the 'things' now in the database.
fetcheveryone.com/points.php
I've temporarily removed the Manual Claim option from this page at present, because I need a better way of letting you search the options, rather than giving you a dropdown with 35,579 options in it Some sort of "type the first few letters" system will work - I just haven't done it yet.
To avoid overcluttering the page, I've also moved the leaderboards for each collection onto a separate page - look for the 'See leaders' link on each category.
The good news is that the whole of the country is covered (largely thanks to the trig points) - so everyone can play. Just follow the link above, click the button to join the challenge, and your whole training log will get dumped into the queue for checking. I've signed up everyone who joined the Wainwrights page, so there's currently about a quarter of a million training entries in the queue - so please be patient. The server is doing about a thousand entries every five mins, so it might take a day or so for everyone to get their finds listed.

A couple of suggestions - if you click on the dot on the map can that bring up some information about what category it falls under? Obvious for trig points as the TP number is there but I don’t have a clue what some of the others are.
Could you make it so that clicking on an item in the list zooms into its location on the map?
Also, how close do you have to get to a point to collect it?
Looking great so far, thanks! 😀8:37am, 24th Feb 2023 -
Following on from Fragile's comments ideas aboveSnail
Could the the red dots on the map be in a different colour if you have visited them?
Is it possible for the County tops - to also say what county they are
Can put these on the usual "request" list if you would prefer them there
Thanks Fetch - This will enable plenty of new route planning and dragging friends/family to "tick things off".
Still, they will prefer that to multiple laps of my local WSW square!!8:51am, 24th Feb 2023 -

The folks on the FE Lake District Lovers have a thing where they keep a tally of all the Lake District summits they have claimed. Collectively the summits are referred to as Wainwrights - after Wales flanker Aaron Wainwright. Or the famous fellwalker Arthur Wainwright. I forget which.
There are 214 in total - including ones called Barf and Great Cockup And there are some folks who have been to the top of every single one!
I figured that it would be fairly straightforward to automatically collect these - so yesterday I built some code that would automatically check your entire training log. Today I also added the ability to manually claim peaks - just in case you did it without GPS. Sign up to track your Wainwrights here:
fetcheveryone.com/wainwright.php
It's been suggested that I could extend this to include other collectibles - like trig points, or a wider range of peaks, or gold postboxes - anything that is fun to collect really. Leave a comment to say what collectible sets you'd like me to include.

There seems to be an intermittent problem at the Fitbit end of our importer.
Normally when you visit this page, you'll see a list of activities (assuming you have a Fitbit!):
fetcheveryone.com/fitbit.php
but it seems that some users are seeing an empty list.
When that page loads, Fetch makes a request to Fitbit to retrieve your recent training data. For some users, the Fitbit server is timing out, and not returning anything useful.
I've reported it on the Fitbit Developer forum, so I'll hopefully get them to get to the bottom of it soon:

The post-Covid comeback is going pretty well. I've managed three consecutive 20+ mileage weeks (alongside swim training), and enjoyed tackling my new local routes which pretty much all involve a hill at some point.
This isn't a 'slap me on the back' blog - I wanted to share what is probably my favourite graph on the entire site, and explain why I find it so useful. It has helped save me from doing every run "as fast as I comfortably can", and meant that I can see improvements in my fitness without needing to push my effort levels. And when you're coming back from illness or injury, that's invaluable. It also goes a fair way towards answering the question "when should I do speed work?".
If you go to the 'Train > Overview' page, you'll see a graph on the right (on desktop) or just under your recent training (on mobile). You can page through the ones you've chosen, or you can click 'Settings' and you can pick from 80 different variants.
My favourite graph is the 'Run Heartbeats/Mile (Rolling)' one.
What's heartbeats per mile please? And thanks.
In about 2010, I realised that heart rate was measured in beats per minute; and pace was measured in minutes per mile. So if you multiply the two together, you get a number measured in beats per mile. If you can run a mile in 10 minutes, with an average heart rate of 130, that's 130 x 10 = 1300 beats per mile.
Very cute. But why should I care?
Let's assume that you get fitter. You run a ten minute mile, and your heart rate is now a bit lower at 125. That lowers your beats per mile figure to 1250. If you *always* run the same pace, you could just ascertain this from your lower heart rate. But the reality is that your pace might get a bit quicker too. You might run that mile in 9m45s, with a HR of 131. How can you tell if you've made an improvement? Beats per mile is at hand. 9.75 x 131 = 1277.25 = nice work! What if you decide to go eyeballs out one day, and run the mile in 8.5 minutes with a HR of 145? Beats per mile gives you 8.5 x 145 = 1232.5 = well done
Be cautious
Heart rate is a *reasonable* indicator of effort, but it's not infallible. In my experience, it's worth comparing like with like. The comparison between an all-guns-blazing 5k, and a long steady run is *reasonable* but you might be better off looking for improvements the next time you do either of those, rather than comparing them to each other. If you're going out and doing the same-ish runs and routes each week, beats per mile figures give you a great way of tracking fitness that combines pace and effort.
Here's what my graph looks like at present. The x-axis shows time, and the y-axis shows my beats per mile using a rolling four week total.
There's a peak in early April on the left. I pulled my hammie at the start of March, so most of March was ruled out, and what there was was all run-walk, which tends to produce higher beats per mile figures. As I slowly dropped the walks, the beats per mile figure dropped to the low 1400s.
To avoid a recurrence of my injury, I ran mostly easy miles, with only four of the 114 miles at quicker than 8:53/mile. My beats per mile figure drops nicely throughout April. I did a bit more speedy stuff during May, and brought the figure down to a low of 1234 - but then lost a bit of focus as the summer came. Then things went to shit, because I fell off a paddle board in July and twisted my knee ligaments
I bimbled along with no goals other than nursing my knee for a couple of months. Then we moved house in November, I got a bladder infection in December, and Covid for Christmas so I didn't exercise (or do much at all) for a month. That big spike over on the right is my first couple of trial two mile runs in mid-January, still coughing a bit. Mercifully that's settled, but I've kept the intensity down, with a fastest mile of 8:50 since the restart. The beats per mile figure is falling nicely again
As for when to do speed work - or any kind of amendment to your training schedule to improve your performance - I'd personally look to see what direction my graph is heading. If the figure is coming down, then what you're doing is already helping you. If it's flat or heading upwards - then maybe it's time to shake things up. One bad run shouldn't discourage you, but this graph shows a four week trend. I say all this with the obvious caveat: my highest relevant qualification for advising you on training regimes is a B in GCSE Biology.
Right. I've bored myself into a corner now, so goodness knows how you must be feeling. Toodles.

Beats per mile is a great measure of fitness, or efficiency, I suppose. Mine used to be much lower (better) than today! But it also goes up with more general, long, slow and hilly miles esp. It is inherently lower when doing flat, faster running. Does that not skew things somewhat? It does for me! So I can really only compare it on similar routes, with similar attempts at pace, like races, for instance. Anyhoo, I've def bored me now! GHappyG(rrr)5:14pm, 20th Feb 2023

I like it too, it's a great measure of progress (or otherwise). On a display point - the graph heading is HB/mile, but when I hover over the line, it's showing HB/Km (which is what I prefer as I work in metric).Llamadance5:37pm, 20th Feb 2023

Interesting, I haven't had this one added to my graphs before (just added it). Mine follows the same pattern as my average pace per mile (rolling) graph does - at the beginning of marathon cycle both avg pace per mile gets slower and beats per mile increases, I guess this must be showing the effect of cumulative fatigue as in the second half of the cycle both drop down again? Hearteningly my beats per mile seems to be on an overall downward trend despite these fluctuations.auburnette5:46pm, 20th Feb 2023
-
I would add though, I'm probably doing more flatter running at the moment because of it being winter and the trails being less appealing, so HappyG's observation above might apply!auburnette5:47pm, 20th Feb 2023
-
I believe I requested that graph 😃SPR
In regards to the observations others have made, I agree that beats per mile is lower for faster runs but the graph is an average over multiple weeks so if training is fairly consistent it will show improvements. A change in training style for a while can sway things but you eventually have a baseline and if you keep training in that manner it's a good measure IMO.8:29pm, 20th Feb 2023 -
I like that graph. One thing I would like to see though on the site is the VO2Max (from file) entry that is in Garmin .fit files as I think that that is similar to this *but better* because the algorithm in the garmin watches is just that bit smarter at removing spurious or dodgy data. It's a bit "garmin centric" though, but what is great about it is that it displays that value even though lots of people's watches don't show it because Garmin in their infinite wisdom suppress the data. Runalyze allows it to be shown, and for me at least it has been the single best indicator of gradual fitness improvements over time, even better than beats per mile.larkim3:39pm, 21st Feb 2023
-
Thanks, I didn't know I could add it to my graphs - I've just done that both for walking and running. In walking, there is a clear trend downwards but in running, it's more dependent on what kind of training I do each week. When I do sprints and intervals, the walk recoveries mess it up a bit.tipsku4:51pm, 21st Feb 2023
-
I remember hearing Steve Way talking about Beats/Mile as a metric years ago, and thinking "Well, if it's good enough for him it's certainly good enough for me". And then promptly forgot all about it.AndyS
Well, I've just been and added this graph - and I don't like what it's telling me (It's monotonically increasing, which I don't think is a good thing).
Is there a way to see what it was like historically? It would be really interesting* to compare it with the last few months of 2019
*For some value of 'interesting'.3:47pm, 23rd Feb 2023 -

Yesterday I ran past a big floor-to-ceiling shop window at the end of the street, and got a good look at my profile.
For reasons I don't need anyone but me to help me overcome (but which I imagine most of us can understand when applied to ourselves) I thought "holy heck, you could be looking better".
Then I carried on and had a lovely five mile run.
The message is simple, but I wanted to share it, incase it helps you today.
Don't let how you feel about how you look hold you back.
Now, where are my Speedos?

I love them. Little moments where a penny drops. Wouldn't it make more sense if...?
Everywhere that you can change the category of a training entry, there used to be a little hanger-on - a little link underneath the category dropdown box, titled 'Edit your category list'. It leads to a page where you can choose from (currently) 241 different subcategories of training.
I thought that was fine as it was. It's right next to the dropdown, so surely it's visible. But I've seen so many users asking me and each other: "why is there no XYZ category?" that I figure it may not be as optimal a solution as I'd hoped for.
Here's what I think happens. The user has opened the dropdown box because they want to find the category they want. The little hanger-on link is probably obscured by the dropdown, so it's not visible. And all the user focus is on the contents of the dropdown, because that's where they want to find their answer. And if the user can't find what they want in the dropdown, they are already thinking "this is crap, it doesn't have XYZ category".
The solution I've come up with is to have 'Add more categories...' as an option in the category chooser dropdown.
Like I said, it really is a tiny change. But usability changes often are.
If you've got a usability suggestion, I am always happy to hear them.

In July I'm hoping to do a 9km swim in Llyn Padarn in North Wales.
Right now, that means ploughing up and down the local 25m pool for an hour at a time, until the weather warms up enough for me to brave some outdoor venues. I'm hoping to get some longer pool swims done in the next month or so as well, and have been eyeing up some two hour swim slots.
It's going pretty well. In the last couple of weeks I've managed to cram a couple of 2.5km swims into 1:00:20 and 1:00:37. It'd be nice (just psychologically) to get that under the hour, but my pace does fade away a little bit in the last 20 minutes of the hour.
It still feels like I'm working hard in that last 20 minutes, and my arm turnover is good - but I've had a longstanding theory that quicker arm movements do not necessarily translate into quicker pace. I knocked up this graph, which shows the number of lengths I've done at each speed over the last 12 months:
My most favoured length time looks to be 37 seconds just now, which is just outside the magic 36 that I'd need to get my '2.5km in an hour' goal. I am hopeful that as I build up my swimming, I can shift that big blue distribution to the left.
But the graph also shows my stroke rate [aside: based on some counting I've done whilst swimming, I think it represents the number of 'left-rights', rather than the number of times my hand enters the water]. It looks pretty clear to me that I am quicker when my stroke rate is lower.
This makes sense to me, with my cod coaching hat on. My arms move more slowly through the water when they are pulling the most water backwards - and the more water I pull backwards, the quicker I move forwards. As my arms tire, they get into bad positions, and don't pull as much water - so they go round quicker, but with less efficient progress.
NB as the lovely Katie will confirm, I am hopeless at being coached - so if it's on the tip of your tongue to offer up some drills, please bear in mind that I won't do them
If you're a regular pool swimmer, come and have a look at your graph:
fetcheveryone.com/training-analysis-poolswims.php
In my case, I am hopeful that the last month or so would offer a better picture than this whole twelve month view - so that's the next place I hope to go with this graph - adding a second set of bars and lines that represent very recent training.
Anyway... it's my turn to cook - so I will smell you all later.

Cadence isn’t everything. Check this video of my Sister-in-law completing a 34km swim in Tasmania. She did it alongside a teammate of hers as a “duo” where both swim the whole distance and have to stay within a very small distance of each other. Her stroke rate was much lower than his but she was more efficient. It took them just over 8 hours 40 mins. fb.watchPothunter10:26pm, 7th Feb 2023

Great video - I loved the commentary, and it really shows that everyone does things their own way That's an epic swim. 34km in 8h40 - that's 15 mins per km - amazing!fetcheveryone
There does seem to be a pattern amongst the swimmer graphs that I looked at - our lowest cadences correspond to our quicker length times, even if we all operate at different cadences. That said, I haven't factored in the length of swims e.g. one person swims 1km every day, another does a 7km swim once a week.
As Nightjar says, the difference is fairly small - my stroke length for 34s lengths is 171cm; and for 38s lengths it's 155cm - about 10% shorter. I think that's technique or tiredness.
Linds - I looked at the data behind your most recent swim. Many watches will just increment the distance by (say) 25m each time to reflect each length - but yours is jumping as follows 0, 0.81, 6.71, 8.22, 22.04, 32.8 etc. This doesn't lend itself to length detection Can you tell me the make and model of your watch, out of interest?9:50am, 8th Feb 2023 -

Is there a way of excluding some swim sessions from the graph? I've had a couple of times of using a 10m pool but Garmin doesn't let me set that as a custom length so I've left it and altered the overall distance of the swim, but the splits still show as if I've done 25m laps and are, or course, wildly inaccurate with stroke rate and pace. Or should I add those swims manually and delete the Garmin log (there's only 5 or 6 I would think)?GimmeMedals10:17am, 8th Feb 2023

Nice feature! Apologies if I'm missing something, but I assume this only works if your swim data is entered via a smartwatch? I've got loads of pool swims logged, but all 'manually'. If you're viewing this on desktop, you might notice a bit of a change to the right-hand side of the site header. I would like to illustrate all the different things that you can do on Fetcheveryone, because it feels like people often don't get the scale of what's possible.
I've spent an hour or so writing tips (75 so far) that highlight different features of the site. I'm by no means done - I reckon I can knock out another 75 without too much trouble.
If you're sure that you know all there is to know about the site, you can hide the tips using the button provided.
The tips don't yet appear on mobile, because as yet I'm not quite sure where best to put them. But I'll have a think about that

I am slowly getting used to the hillier terrain now that we're living out of the centre of Bedford. Yesterday I treated the country lanes to the united colours of Fetcheveryone:

The problem with choosing a more subtle location is that they will not be seen. If I remember rightly, there are about half a million unread notifications in the system right now.
