Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

Some of us struggle with the 'it works' mentallity; some of us find great enjoyment in dissecting such physical models, how to estimate the response of a individual rider to inputs, and thinking about how to efficiently handle the interaction of large quantities of riders. It's not moaning - it's just a particular intellectual curiosity! 😁

When I get to a pc tomorrow, I'll sketch out the governing equations and screenshot them, and hopefully that might help with understanding what's going on (unless I confuse things more!)

JdA - did a few hours but nothing heavy. Usually crit before the ttt but we have 6As and a very strong B tomorrow.

OK MM I'll shut up and try to just ignore the intellectually superior when they start dissecting, way way above my brain power :-)

I'm just a boy looking at a screen playing a video game hoping that when I get outside all the hard work has made me a cycling GOD :-)

God may be ambitious but I’m hoping for demi-godly performance in the real world this year too :-)

Roll on next month and the start of the club TTs...

For those interested in the physics of cycling, this page looks quite good.

gribble.org

Zwift’s simulator will almost certainly be built along very similar physical principles though I don’t think I’ve seen an explicit presentation of this.

Interesting thanks jda. I guess I can't really criticise Zwift for going for "realism", it just feels odd to be blending some parts (e.g. actual weight) with virtual ones (e.g. bike weight) together. But I suppose it relies on something pretty physical to drive the purpose of the game overall.

As Gobi says - just enjoy it, use it for training etc. But I do like to "understand" too.

larkim, I don't know the answer, but do they not use the real bike weights/specs in their virtually equivalent bikes? If so, I'm not sure if it's really blending real and virtual, but just trying to be consistent. If not, regardless for me, the bikes are just a feature of the game, and the levelling up/sweat drops aspect of it, and I just try to ride the best kit for the ride I'm doing. I.E., when I did the Uber Pretzel I jumped on the mountain bike on the off-road section saving a couple of mins there compared to a road bike, and when I went up AdZ I jumped on the climbing bike as I was struggling at that point! When I get the Tron bike, probably I won't bother too much with that stuff :)
