Just posted this on a different Fetch YouTube thread, but I think this is the main one? So apologies for duplicate post.

There was a bit of controversy about Matt Choi at NYC Marathon as he was disqualified, removed from the race results, and banned from any future NYRR events.

Basically, he had a couple of unauthorised eBikes filming him on the course, with reports of them getting in the way at aid stations, clipping people, and generally being a PITA. The rules clearly state no unauthorised bikes allowed, and probably he broke other rules as well.

He was there with running brand Runna, and ran with one of them to a sub-3, but Runna claim they didn’t know he was going to bring his own film crew, as they had their own authorised photographers on the course. Runna have since dropped Matt Choi.

In the small world of marathoning and running influencers, it’s caused a bit of a scandal.

My own take is that I’m glad he’s been DQ’d. But I guess from his perspective there is no such thing as bad publicity!

Should be a DQ for his no vest flex tbh.

Sounds like a D"*k to me. How on earth can someone think that's OK to do at any race let alone the largest one in the world.

Interesting. I've never come across this guy before, clearly has some running talent, but perhaps thinks a little too much of himself. I'd be keen to watch if he publishes a video about this debacle. I doubt i'll watch any others.

He did publish an apology on his instagram. He’s mainly on there I think, but does pop up on YouTube as well.

Not trying to take this all too seriously, but I think these influencers are a bit of a problem. Brands know they can basically gift a bib to the influencer with a large following, probably throw them a few dollars, and get some fairly big exposure to a targeted audience. The amount of shakeout runs at majors and other races organised by brands with influencers is getting ridiculous, in my view. I actually went to one on Saturday in NYC, organised by Abbott, and it had Martin Yelling and Deena Kastor there. I was dubious about whether to go, but it was a nice run, but they made it clear that any images would be used for social media and they had two photographers on bikes follow the group around on a 5K shakeout run with about 50 runners. It’s all about the content!

Andy Raynor (FOD Runner) did a fairly good video from his point of view yesterday or the day before. He records his races but doesn’t obstruct anyone. His point was that his main focus is the running, and he records the races almost as a side project. Whereas possibly some other YouTubers have it the other way around, and it’s the content that is the main thing in their minds.

I follow probably about half a dozen running channels on YouTube and I don't "think" I'd catagorize any of those as influencers in the gaudy sense of the word. I'm there to learn stuff about running etc and not to buy shit. But I guess to an extent, if a channel I follow happens to put out a review of something occasionally in the midyear of all their other content....

I think, for me, it’s the ones that one week are promoting a particular brand at a race and saying nice things about that brand. And then a couple of weeks later they’re at a different race with a different brand, saying nice things about that brand that week. There are a few independent YouTubers out there, or at least YouTubers with a sponsorship they’ve had for quite some time, and personally I value them more.

The term "influencer" always makes me smile. Ninety-nine percent of these people are nothing more than a mouth and a microphone. Why anyone would be influenced by what such nonentities say beats me.

I'll watch or read their views, briefly, if I'm considering buying a particular product as part of the overall research and due diligence but I certainly wouldn't buy or commit to anything merely on their say-so.
