If parkrun stops being timed with results then someone else will set up a rival and probably succeed this time. What the old hands who were there early on can see is pressure constantly being applied to parkrun to dumb down. It is in my mind and many others that in time running will be frowned upon at parkrun as it is ableist.

This is a discussion we've had many times on the parkrun thread, as you know, but don't forget that parkrun on the ground and parkrun HQ are not the same thing. We don't have parkwalkers, for example.

Saw some comments that over the weekend (and maybe the one before) that the debate has been taken to the "front line" as it were, with those advocating strongly about gender identity-based rankings being unfair attending parkrun events and engaging with runners to make their case.

e.g. twitter.com

This makes me uncomfortable; whatever the rights and wrongs 9am on a Saturday is a time for a run, not for a tense and often challenging debate.

Can I see this from another side? If parkrun was (say) an exclusively male event, would I have an issue from pro-women participation groups attending and trying to make a change? Maybe, so why am I uncomfortable with this issue being challenged? (I don't have a robust answer to that).

In reality I know one trans gender person who does parkrun (female to male, identifies as male). His time is a lot faster than any of mine but probably on the slower side for a man of his age.

When I compare this to my experiences as a run director for two years, the impact on gender statistics is negligible when compared to the impact of people who went over the finish line after two laps pretending they’d done three, or perhaps not realising.

This happened to me on Saturday when I was touring, a woman with a whinging kid right behind me for two laps, disappeared when I did the third and shows up in the results as a 25 minute parkrun. I was walking btw.

So my conclusion is, it’s just not an issue, really, is it?

I was coming on to say something similar. I think someone did some analysis on here a while back but I wonder how many course records, age group records, etc. are held by transgender runners. I guess it might be hard/impossible to tell, but considering the overall percentage in the population, I can't imagine it's many. It feels like the WRN are picking an easy target to make some noise. Which is their right, of course, but it's also my right to feel that it's not fair for volunteer teams and other runners to be challenged in this way when they just want to put on/run a parkrun. Core teams are not responsible for the way that HQ choose to run their organisation (which I support in this case, btw). I wouldn't be very happy if somebody started to try and debate with me about the parkrun sponsors, either, some of which I feel quite negative about.
