@Solo that was a very good progressively run 10 miles. @alehouse nice progress. Inevitable it will take a good while yet to recover fully, given the time out and weight gain. Same for @Canute and @Torque Steer. All three of you, and @Welshpoppy have been very sensible and patient. Unfortunately as we get older there is increasing risk of aggravating injuries and new medical issues popping up that can prolong recovery. But even if never fully regain pre-'injury' performance levels, QOL should benefit from the cautious improvements you have been making. Undoubtedly a cautionary tale there for me! Perhaps more focus on maintaining fitness and minimising injury risk than pushing to the limit. Not easy though when there are tempting targets apparently close at hand ...! Steady 8.3 km runs yesterday (WR27 shoes) and this morning (SB2). Clear now there are too many variables for reliable comparison without a lot more results. Yesterday was a carbon copy of Tuesday's run (both 6:24/km, 116/127 HR) except for shoes and air temperature. Much cooler conditions (~8C vs 14C on Tue). Even though average pace & HR were identical, yesterday seemed harder. Shoes felt like they had lead dampers under the forefoot, especially for the first few km. But quite chilly (probably < 7C in places), which seemed to keep my HR down. This morning warmer (12C) and run a bit faster (6:14/km) with HR up at 118/132. No complaints from R quad 👍. Still won't do parkrun tomorrow though as have not done any speedwork to fully test the muscle. |

@OO61 - it works Redcar HM - does it include the infamous hill up from the seafront? You could have this view @Solo - well you should be really swift this morning - frost on the lawns here and I find myself sitting in shorts before shortly going off to see the consultant/physio etc at hospital! @Welshpoppy - that flare up in your achilles is most annoying when you were going so well. Would a heel wedge help to alleviate any over stretching? @alehouse big relative step up in effort - may need more sustenance to support it @NZD - the list does get longer! the bio-mechanical ones are usually within one's control, it's all the other "stuff". Any progress on your recent diagnosis? Lead dampers are not a good feel!! But your run this morning seemed like a good outing in warmer temperatures and HR well within normal bounds for the pace. Wordle in five - I am paying for my one! |

Hello I've lurked for a while, checking in after qualifying by a birthday this week. My 'training' is currently going back to a sort of couch to 5k then 10k after too many years stuck in a run-walking habit, seeing how my arthritic joints and temperamental tendons cope with consistent running. So not in the same league as most of you! I'm slow but can keep moving for 24 hours. Today I plan to try a 20min easy run to test how the ankle I rolled on Tuesday is feeling. |

Welcome @Rosehip Hope today's run goes to plan TS: I have orthotics already but I have been taping it with Kinsology tape and it is helping. After a flare up usually takes ten weeks to be back to normal. Easy 4 miles this morning and went fine if you like 1 degrees a bit of shock to system.I ran in my Mizuno thermal top TS recommended last winter or the winter before. Then ice tub a new low of 8 degrees decided no bathing suit as I will stand in it.My feet were numb I lasted 7 minutes I was aiming for 10! Maybe socks left on next time. But talking to local old farmer he supplies all veg for market on Friday's we are due warmer weather last week September and first two weeks of October. |

Hi @Rosehip Not all in faster league here! As you know from The Daily Thread, I'm still trying to get going again after back problems. Getting the miles in - but slowly! 3 miles today up a small hill around and around a reservoir, off road. |

@NZD pleased to hear the quad hasn't been too much of a hindrance. I rarely find any two runs are the same when training consistently, I think fatigue plays a big part along with weather. I know my Garmin VO2 can go down when tired a bad is usually a good indicator for me I need rest! @Torque Steer temperatures wamer here today and a sunny 14 degrees. Yesterday's 8 mile was much better than anticipated after my 10 in cool conditions 😁 @Your determination to overcome your obstacles always inspires me @Welshpoppy I have heard weather is to be warmer again too. Hello @Rosehip this is a very diverse and inclusive thread so nice to see you here. I know I couldn't do the distances you have! Hope the ankle settles quickly. @OO61 I believe Hilly is doing Redcar as a masters qualification race too. I have had a much busier week than normal at work but no work today so caught up on some much needed sleep. Over 10 hours last night as no 6.30 alarm. I was tired! A short easy run later as lots of weekend running planned |

thanks all was warming up nicely by the time I got out - but I run hot and am looking forward to cooler days! @Welshpoppy sorry the achilles is troublesome - I have a grumpy one too, manageable but scared it's going to do something drastic! I might try taping it to see if it helps @PeterFay lovely place to run hope the back recovers well 10 hours sleep sounds lovely @Solo ! |

Welcome @Rosehip. As you know I have followed your blogs describing your U25K programme with special interest, and have been impressed by progress. I hope the the rolled ankle does not prove to be a set-back. @PeterFay Peter fay, a lovely place to run. Today I was also lucky to be jogging in delightful surroundings, with the intricately indented façade of the Howgills framing much of the eastern horizon. @Solo , I hope the weekend running goes well. @NZD , thanks for your comments. I agree that it is essential to take things cautiously in one’s late 70’s. My current dilemma is that there is evidence that loss of fitness accelerates in the late 70’s, and I am eager to minimise that loss. I anticipate that it will be increasing difficult to recover fitness as I approach 79. As mentioned yesterday, I am pleased that my knee has coped with my recent jog/walk sessions, but I am a little dismayed at my loss of fitness. In my jog/walk session this morning, I increased pace a little while taking care to minimise the increase in stress on my knee. I therefore increase cadence to 195-200 steps per minute while keeping stride length around 70 cm. My pace was around 7:15 /Km. It is probable that cadence of 200 at 7:15 /Km is too high for optimal for efficiency, but minimising efficiency is not my current goal. If anything, it is advantageous to have sub-optimal efficiency as this increases work load per Km and is likely to enhance the training effect. |
