@Solo, very well done time-wise and in heading off your two local rivals. Also very well done @OO61 on your GNR result. @Canute wise decision to cut back to 10 after increasing run to 3 mins. Also many thanks for the detailed information re VO2max. Interesting and much appreciated. Ditto the details you provided @Torque Steer. Hope the ear is healing well. Any follow up testing or treatment? @alehouse, the loss of fitness is inevitable but still frustrating. Hopefully will rebound quickly once you get further into your recovery. @Welshpoppy you are having a run of problems. But good to see you are being patient and taking it sensibly. Still using the ice box regularly? Muscle bruise has eased off a bit but whole body a touch achy today after further tree root fun yesterday afternoon. Heavy going and still about half to do. Inclining to bring in the chainsaw next weekend to hopefully speed up the work. Held off that so far as dirt will munt the chain. But now concluded it is the only way to speed up the work so will be worth it. Must have taken close to 2 hours yesterday to cut through one ~12 inch diameter root using a mix of skill saw, reciprocating saw and axe! Cautious, slow 8.3 km at 6:37/km this morning. Could feel the bruise but it was otherwise OK while running. Would not like to have applied any pace on it though. More noticeable walking afterwards but that too eased off over the day. PL down a notch but not sure if that was due yesterday's efforts or because I used my barely run in Mizuno Waverider shoes. Don't seem to suit my running style 😕. Did highlight how much better the SB2 are. |

OK, maybe it was more like one hour. But certainly felt like two!

WP. Re abbreviations. PL per discussion a couple of pages back = Performance Level from my old Suunto watch (approx equivalent of VO2max). SB2 = Asics Superblast 2 running shoes. Not cheap but I have been really impressed with them. I ended up with the Waveriders as I had to get shoes at short notice in Bermuda (delayed luggage). The Waveriders were the only option the sports shop there had that were comfortable for me. Needed to be comfortable from go-get as I had the HM two days later. But they are a lot less cushioned than I am used to. Cushioning is important for me as almost all my running is on concrete paths. The SB2's aren't as cushioned as my old Asics Nimbus shoes, but they are OK. That aside, the SB2's also feel faster (& faster than my previous Nimbus shoes). When I first got them, I frequently found my watch showing my pace 20 or so sec/km faster than I thought I was running. Getting back into the Waveriders this morning, it was the reverse. Felt slow. But I can't guarantee that the gardening activities on the weekend weren't contributing to that! |

Canute's comment on the last page about VO2Max Canute wrote: is a fairly good indicator of current aerobic fitness (and also predicts life-expectancy). That is exactly what the respiratory consultant told me when he analysed my CPET (Cardio Pulmonary Exercise Test) results. The CPET was done to determine why I had been very SOB and been having chest pains - it turned out I had developed late adult onset asthma, and not CAD that a cardiologist thought I might have. That counteracts the life shortening autoimmune disease I have (by how much the AID shortens my life I don't know, but hopefully not by much due to all the measures I take to help myself ). As an aside, I have a benign liver condition, Gilbert's Syndrome, and people with GS often have longer telomeres which are associated with longer lifespans . As a bonus, GS is associated with a reduced risk of respiratory illnesses. Now if only my legs would co-operate, I could start running properly again and make the most of this "long" life I might be having. |

Impressive result at the GNR @OO61 and bodes well for your marathon. Congratulations! @NZD pleased to see you are still able to run after your encounter with a dangerous tool! How is your running @Flatlander ? @Welshpoppy do you think the change of shoe could have aggravated your achilles? |

@Solo : I wish I cold attribute to shoes but it flared up before shoes due to new version of my favorite shoes being too low on heel drop, stiff and uncomfortable.I also do not like the platform under forefoot with new shoes. But off to shoe shop Friday to try some shoes on don't think I have been in shoe shop for 8 years. |

Well done, @OO61 ! A good confidence booster! Was looking after my young grandson today (Salvador, aged two and a bit). Took him for a walk along the river at the end of my road, gathering sticks along the way to play Pooh Sticks from the nearby bridge, which he enjoyed. Shortly afterwards a young German Shepherd, off the lead, ran straight at him, knocking him over into nettles, and I struggled to get the dog off him; "Only a puppy"/"I didn't see you"/"Only playing" etc. Fortunately Salvi was fine apart from nettle stings all over one side of his face. Could have been much worse. Owners need to pass some sort of training course! One downside is I seem to have damaged my hamstring again in the process; hopefully it will go as quickly as it came. Rather tender at present. |

That was a rather unfortunate incident @alehouse both for you and Salvador. @Solo I am still stuck on about 3 miles and even that is sometimes an effort. I was hoping to improve a bit more but that will be delayed because some work on the house is about to start, conservatory refurbishment, and I have to remove everything in the conserevatory and take down all my nice decorative mouldings. When the work is done, I then have to put them all back in place. I'd only just about finished putting back all the furniture after the internal soundproofing work. |
