A big question - how do you know you're ready for sun 330? I've done some test runs - 'Gobi' 20 (progressive) - hard but coped. I've raced 20 - started at 8mm, crashed and burned, ended up wobbling it at 2.54. I've done 10 at 9mm then 10 at a mean average of 8.01mm - felt knackered afterwards. A voice in my head is saying forget 330, run cautiously (8.15s) and save 330 for another day.
Any opinions, don't worry about brutal honesty, that could be what I need

I did a 20 mile race at 7.38 so knew that I ought to beable to do another 6 at a slightly slower overall pace

BVR, we have similar head-voices. I don't know the answer.

Great run Hellen congrats!
In reply to Bellevue, whatever you do, make sure you enjoy the day. There is nothing worse than aiming for a sub something, missing it and it ruining the whole experience.

By the way that's from my Berlin experience (3.30.09), when I should have enjoyed the day much more instead of focusing on a "failure"
By way of comparison, I'd a 1.35 half and done a 22 in training @ 8.35 average which was pretty easy going before that.

Without a recent long race it is v hard to know and I too would have had those head voices saying no you can't do it .
In training things feel quite diff to race day. I have , in the last, done progressive runs in training with the last 5 miles at MP and it has felt like I have been racing a 10km so I have thougth I couldn't do that for a marathon but then I did.
I think the more you do the more you know how diff stages should feel on the day so you have to go with how things are feeling more than a certain pace

i too am in the shall / can i or could / should! i will be looking a lot at heart rate as that is my gage of effort and i have some good data from training to compare it to. i will prob decide on the day / within the first few miles whether to go for the pb of 3:35 ish (current pb 3:39) or whether to go for the sub-3:30. i want to go for the 3:30 if i am capable but not risk blowing my chances of a pb. i have abingdon which was always originally the 3:30 plan.

Thanks for all the help. My inclinationnis currently to forget sub3.30 and aim for 3.39 or something like that. Doing under 8mm in the final 10 of a 20 just felt too hard, like the end of a 10k. I was running against the wind, there were a few hills but it was a net downhill final 10. I ran fast (7.30) to bring my average to 8.01 as I was downhill and needed to catch up with myself.

I wouldn't write it off based on the last 10 mies being hard, my last 5 miles of a progressive run where I only do 5 miles at MP felt far too hard Things feel quite different with a taper and on race day
