Of my 10, only one has had a positive split, and that was my PB.

Of the other 9, 7 were run following the "put time in the bank early doors" policy, and by the time I'd got through the wall, I'd overdrawn.

No, not positive split. Negative split. I was running 7.25 minute miles in the last 6 miles of Mablethorpe 2010!

You need to feel absurdly comfotrable for 20 miles then close to death for 6. That's a correct, best performance mara! Imho of course! :-)G

thats good FR
I think I would have to disagree there happy, sorry
the times when I have been 'close to death' for the last 6 miles are when I have had a very bad run and am loosing pace fast.

For my better runs I have been comfortable for the first half, then I have started thinking to myself that it feels a little hard for half way and that I am bound to fade but I'll keep it up and see what happens. By 20 miles I feel no different to 13 (so it is prob a confidence thing at 13). Then by mile 23 I am working out what I need to do to finish under X so I dig in a bit just to make sure I get it but even then I have not felt like death, it has felt hard but certainly not death.

The pattern I describe has been the case in my recent marathon PBs or just races where I havnt PB-ed eg on Sunday which was not a PB course. In these races I did pretty much even pacing, sometimes negative split sometimes tiny positive split.

Hi All,

I ran the Tunbridge Wells Half this morning in the run up to Manchester marathon at the end of April. I went out hoping to keep an eye on the 1.30 pacer and see how it went at 7 minute mile pace but found the first two miles (mostly uphill), a real struggle. From 2 till 6 it was looking okay and I thought a PB (currently 1 33 44) might be on but again I struggled up a hill which started just before six miles and I was passed by the 1.40 pacer which was a bit depressing. I reached half way in 47.17 (about 45 secs down on PB pace) with 1 40 pacer just ahead but then I lost at least two minutes on the big hill from halfway to 8 miles. I never got the pre-hill pace back and finished in 1h 38m 48s. Good run with sub 3h30m in mind but I was hoping for sub 1 35 to reaffirm my 3 20 plans. I have a (very flat) 10 miler next week so I will have to see how that goes. Legs are really sore right now but hopefully they will recover quickly!

Cheers pn

Hello everyone! Hoping for a sub 3.30 in VLM this year. Managed 3.40 in Abingdon in October and hoping to improve on this. Can relate to many of the comments about going really well for 20 miles then a very tough 6 miles!

Training quite hard but wasn't feeling too positive until I did a 1.37 half marathon last weekend which has given me boost and made me think I am on track. Following a 3 run a week plan - doesn't sound too much compared to others I'm sure but they are 3 intense runs (1 x Tempo, 1 x Intervals & 1 x Long Run).

Looking forward to reading other people's progress!

Good luck everyone!

Hills of Death (HOD)
Did first 20 easy today after 1.43 half last week but with less tired legs I think it would of been 1.38

Good running puffinnuffin, barry and HOD and welcome to the thread barry :-)

Interesting that you all convert a 1:37/8 half into a sub-3:30. I set my half PB of 1:37 in the build-up to VLM in 2010 and I then ran VLM in 3:39 which was my target time. I am not suggesting that it's not possible to run a faster mara than 3:39 off that half time, but actually pleasantly reassured / surprised. I do have some nagging doubts in my mind that I underperformed at VLM even though I achieved my aim - but the last 10 miles (never mind 6!) were so so hard and I clocked a new max HR in mile 26, so probably wasn't that far off being carted away by st johns :-0!! (though I felt fine once I'd crossed the line!).

I am definitely going for sub-3:30 in the autumn at Abingdon, and plan to race a half about 6-7 weeks before it - would like to scrape a PB but that won't be the main focus of training as the mara PB is the one I want. So good to know that you guys think the sub-3:30 is a good possibility off a 1:37 half.

I have a Marathon PB of 3.28.38, my HM PB at the same time was 1:39 something set outside of the training period for that race. I've only been below 1:40 twice in total, dropped my PB to 1:38 last year while training for a marathon, and only managed 3:57.

I'm therefore proof that it's perfectly possible to run sub 3:30 off 1:37 half.
