flanker, the problem with Stuart Mills' blog is precisely that he has a GB vest doing it.

Truthfully, I've never performed well going out fast, at any race, of any length.

Therefore in summary for the average runner, or in my case, sub-average runner, Stuart's assertions are dangerous and silly. Just count at your next race how many people you pass by running either negative or equal splits!!!

Someone who beat me by ages in a recent marathon described it as a 20 mile jog followed by a 10k race. I may try that strategy some time!

FR, i wasn't advocating it. Just putting forward a different view, and that different people work in different ways. As I've said to you many a time, I believe even pacing is the way to go for a mara and that going out too fast is a recipe for disaster ;-)

Heebs - I pretty much agree, but how I take it is that the PRE should *feel* like a 20 mile jog and a 10k race.

Sorry, flanker, my response was a bit aggressive and dismissive of the different approach.

hj - Some marathon runners say your race doesn't start until the 20 mile mark.

I've tried races where i put minutes in the bag early on, it only works for me to a certain degree. With my current pb i've started going at even pacing and 'hoping' for a final few miles quicker than that.
Seems to work for some and not for others :)

Flanks I can sort of understand his view however negative splits in marathons are rare. You will positive split more than likely just how much depends how silly you are ;).

A wise old man (62 years old) once told me (and I trust him as he did 75 marathons ave 3.37 ) the secret of doing a good marathon is two even halfs (or in my case as close as possible)

King hell Fenners if your sub average what de f88c am I lol

I've got to make significant progress in the next month, tonight did only three one mile intervals at PMP and heart rate was 82-83%

You might be tired (or old ;) )

Hellen sounds a lot like my marathons with a bit of postive split lol. This year at London with a LOT of POSTIVE split and a lot of walking !!
