Hills of Death (HOD) you can see my training on strava but I do about half to two thirds of my long runs as slow as I want (often +90 secs from MP) then the remainder have some sort of MP built into them which brings the average speed up.

I have run a 3:42 full with none of my long runs done at faster than +60 seconds to actual MP, imagine it was similar or even more pronounced in my PB marathon.

I converted 1.38 to 3.29 (rounded up) in 2017.
Recover well from your chest infection and good luck going forward Mr J.

Thank you very much clare1976 and Mark J 🇳🇿.

To the question about long run training pace, particularly the early ones: I’m often 1:30 - 2:00 minutes above my marathon race pace. I aim to finish with a few brisker miles in long runs nearer to the taper, but I don’t stress it too much. Race day magic dust seems to do the trick somehow.

Yes Aub I’ll check out your strava I have Stamford 30k on Sunday the plan is to jog at the start and then push on from mile 10.

My run on Friday was just over 9mm it was comfortable 15 miles.

On conversion 1.37 in 2022 I did 3.44 (heat got me at Salzburg)

Last year 1.39 on half and 3.42 legs were tired from 19 I was on for 3.34-35 which I thought was a fair reflection of my training. But the long runs were obviously too quick

My best conversion is 1:39:57 to 3:35 full. My training has been very marathon specific which has helped improve it. I need to get my half a bit faster to run sub 3:30 I think. That said, the 1:39 was poorly executed with a slightly too fast start.

Hey all,

thanks for the welcome and thanks clare1976 for being admin for so long before. Please can you fmail me with attempts, where and when expected this year and if anyone wants to add their success for last year, fmail those through to.

Not sure how active I'll be within the thread outside of the above but I will try to contribute and keep conversations flowing. I note that the sub 3:30 & 3:15 thread are very active with some great conversations around training etc. It would be great to keep that alive and well.

Cheers all,

Mark

Out of interest how does everyone do their long runs the early ones are like MP plus 60 secs. Then like Sunday I do MP plus 45 secs changing to MP plus 15 secs finishing on MP

This weekend coming, as an example, I'll be doing a 28k which will include 2 x 5km @MP. The rest of it will be easy pace, up to 1:30 mins slower than MP. I'll do this and variations on a theme for three weeks of each with the fourth week being a shorter and all easy paced long run. If that make sense.

Thinking about first marathon this year - done about 1:35 for a half. Is sub 3:30 a realistic aim?

I certainly hope so, as that's what I'm planning on doing. My half PB from last Nov is 1:34. Currently I'm training at 3:15 marathon pace, with the express aim of hitting a sub 3:20, ideally. And if I achieve better than that, woohoo!!
