yep -it's free transport in and around London on marathon day. My story being having returning to a tentative jog 2 weeks before London after 3weeks out with achilles tendonitis and trying to run a sub3 was not my wisest decision. Between not being in sub3 shape on the day and achilles playing up had me pull out at mile 16 and jump on the DLR to the finish to collect my bag and frighten the life out a clubmate who'd just run a 2.48
As for WW - he'll need to tell his own story!

London 2012: Olympic year. Was gonna be my 1st sub3. Glory awaited. I went off just ever so slightly (!) too quickly and started walking about 15 miles. I gave in at Canary Wharf and climbed the barriers but only after a struggle with a well-meant spectator who was desperate for me to carry on and literally pushed me back on to the course!! Got on the tube in the end and then it broke down. Wasn’t the happiest Sunday I’ve ever had!!
I got back to the finish with about 3 hours on the clock. It was all pretty sickening. Lesson learned though so I thought.
I also walked at Bournemouth in 2016. I think it was 5 weeks out from Valencia and the plan was to jog round in 3:30ish. Didn’t taper, went through halfway in about 1:44 and then started to suffer soon after. Never really understood that one but vowed never to go in to a marathon without taking it seriously ever again. Walked much of the last 3 miles for a 3:42. Ran 3:03 in Valencia. Odd...
Also walked at Snowdonia in 2018. Didn’t train properly and went off WAY too quickly. What did I say up there 👆?! Couldn’t even muster a sprint and ran 3:30:02 or something stupid. Stupid race!! Stupid man!!

Thinking about it a little more my stats don’t look very good really:
Marathons runs: 14 Featured walking: 4 DNF: 1
The bad ones can be a great learning experience or a real dent to the confidence.

I wouldn't worry about the stats ww, in years to come all that matters is the best time you achieved and the work that went into getting there.
If I analysed my stats ,the reading would look disastrous but it doesn't bother me because I've also knocked out some reasonable times along the way.
Thankfully I retired back in 2018 😉

LOL, if I go from marathons entered to completed, I'm not so hot: Marathons entered: 6 Marathons completed: 2 DNS - injured before hand: 2 DNS - covid: 1 DNF - but shouldn't really have started: 1
And I did walk in Snowdonia (though I paced it better than WW!), so that's only really 1 fully run marathon.

Ultras: 9 - walked in all of them, though Glasgow to Edinburgh 55 in 8:30 was minimal Marathons: 16 Attempted for a PB: 6. PBs achieved. 6! (2008-2013 Edinburgh 3:42 to Ldon 2:57) Attempted for a time but not PB: 4. Time achieved: 4 (Post PB fun but for a time!) For fun, not a time: 6. Walked... 6! (including guiding, hilly ones, Guinness Record in a kilt etc.!)
I suppose I could say that a couple of the ones with walks I didn't meant to walk - Boston last year and hot London 2018 but was more for fun, certainly not well trained and for a time.
So lots of walking. But intentional! G

Marathon horror stories. This is fun.
I've managed to run all 8 Londons. Lanzarote 2015 was my only walker out of 24 (and only one over 3:30); 1:35 to half way only just managed under 2 hours for the second half. I melted in the heat! Did Baz say something about going off too quickly? Here is today's lesson on how NOT to run a marathon:
First six miles: 1) 1m - 7:05(7:05/m) 138/146bpm 2) 1m - 7:12(7:12/m) 143/150bpm
3) 1m - 7:13(7:13/m) 149/153bpm
4) 1m - 7:16(7:16/m) 147/157bpm
5) 1m - 7:20(7:21/m) 149/152bpm
6) 1m - 7:06(7:06/m) 148/152bpm
Last 7.2 miles: 19) 1m - 7:57(7:57/m) 157/159bpm
20) 1m - 8:58(8:58/m) 154/160bpm
21) 1m - 9:13(9:13/m) 150/156bpm
22) 1m - 9:06(9:06/m) 150/157bpm
23) 1m - 9:44(9:44/m) 144/154bpm 24) 1m - 12:49(12:49/m) 129/150bpm
25) 1m - 10:52(10:52/m) 134/145bpm
26) 1m - 10:05(10:05/m) 138/150bpm
27) 0.32m - 3:34(11:17/m) 146/153bpm

Oh this will take some adding up
Marathons entered: Eek no idea Marathons completed: 150 ish Sub 3:15's - 20
DNS - Too many , usually didn't feel like getting up at stupid o'clock DNF - Quite a few, normally due to not feeling like it.

B Rubble, I had something similar to that at Sofia last year but in fairness mine was due to injury. Went out at 8s (3:30) as I'd done 3:27 a couple of weeks before at Berlin. Nearly stepped off the course at half way (it's a two lapper). Ended up with 3:55 (around 25min positive split), with a few 10s and 11s thrown in towards the end. Ooooph.
Palma de Majorca. Awful. Hot and lots of walking. It's a two-lapper and I was very, very tempted to step off the course at half way. Still not really sure why I carried on as it was a real struggle, but we were there on a club trip so that kind of forced me to carried on.
Dartmoor Vale Marathon one year. This one was more or less on my door step (it is no longer running) and I went on to do it a few times, but my first one (which was only my 3rd marathon) was dreadful. It's a two lapper with a steep hill each lap, which I knew I had to walk. No problem with that. But around there on the second lap, I remember it absolutely chucked it down with rain and I was very cold. The course levelled out and as it's such a small field, there was no one ahead of me and no one behind me in sight. With the rain bouncing off the ground as I was running along a small country road on my own, I ground to a halt and wondered what on earth I was doing. There was only one thing to do though and that was to keep going. There was no quicker way back.
