Having to consider speedwork today for the first time in months. Yuk. Have a virtual 5k relay in 2 weeks (Erme Valley virtual relays - you might be aware of Oscar as you're out this way-ish I seem to recall?) , and at least two excellent members on my team, (we're V40).
I wish I was like those who could rack up and trot an 18-19minute 5k. I will have to fight hard to get into the 20s, even though I can rustle up 22s in training has part of a longer run. So some mile reps.

It's my first post on here, but I'm doing the Erme Valley Relays too It's a great event usually and my club (Teignbridge Trotters) are entering some teams again.
I've been training exclusively to MAF for the last few weeks, so doing a fast (relatively) 5k could prove, errrrm, "interesting"!

Baz - Like I said, people take these challenges seriously. It's not sustainable as week in week out lifestyle but for a couple of weeks in a challenge people will do a lot as they're motivated by the challenge.
How long is the challenge for?

Probably better off doing strides and tempo/ progressive IMO.
Tempo/ progressive - get used to running fast for sustained length of time.
Strides get legs running turnover going so 5k turnover is easy.
If mile reps can be done as well, then cool.

I'm Somerset based, Chris. Don't think I have heard of this one but sounds good!
Funnily enough, I have my first track session Friday coming up. Equally apprehensive of speed, but good controls of virus risk and limits on numbers

welcome Big_G, we're generally friendly on here only occasionally straying in to highly aggressive over pacing or heart rate
I did 18:00 for my 5k the other night as part of the virtual BMAF relays. I thought I might be able to run a bit quicker than that and so went out with some intent but a 5:42 opening mile left me absolutely wading for the last 5 mins. Getting your pacing wrong in a 5k is just so awful!! Don't be like me!
That VLM announcement has left me in limbo a bit. I think I might up my long run to 16/17 miles over the next few weeks. August is then a write-off with holidays so if it's on it'll be off a couple of 20s in September and a wing and a prayer.
sorry, no steps banter. I actively try not to look at them as it's another (irrelevant) stat for me to obsess over if I'm not careful.

Well that was horrid but not disastrous. We have actual wheel measured marks in the valley that Garmin insists are 0.01 short. 3 reps (only planned 3) - 6.24 (6.11 on markings - Garmin definitely long on this one), 6.25 (6.16 on markings), 6.41 (6.37 on markings). After wine and beer last night and the humid claggy conditions, I'll take that.
SPR - yes have been doing tempo every other week of 10-13 miles, so not totally out of touch. So yes, wanted to feel want mile reps felt like. Answer was horrible, but I think that was forgetting what oxygen debt felt like. Strides sound like a good call next. Tomorrow is easy long run (12-13 miles).

Better than the 5k I submitted WW, I'm still messing around in this lockdown cup with mates so the 5k course I ran included 321 feet of elevation... It's probably the toughest parkrun around here so pretty happy with my 18.09 (18:02 for the parkrun segment).
