Here's a bit of basic maths to give some thought to - if your race shoes are 100g lighter each then every 4 steps is roughly 1lb. I do 80 steps roughly per 1/10th mile on each side. So that is 20lb per mile of lifting. To make the maths easy, let's multiply that by 25, that would be 500lb per foot or 1000lb over the course of a marathon - around 70 stone of lifting saved in lighter shoes. I only worked this out this morning... Worth trying!! (I did in my last one and it worked for me) - I have simplified massively of course.

And if you don’t have the cushioning you may need you mahexperience foot pain and possible injury.

Well done Steve and Gus. Would love to hear how Steve paced to 3.14.55 - that's either very clinical or very brave or possibly both! I'd +1 for Curly's post. Track spikes are different from XC. Take care on track. I think they take a lot of getting used to. XC are no prob in terms of muscle and joint impact cos the ground is squishy. Though take care not to trip on rocks and roots esp in 12mm or longer spikes! Lighter shoes for racing aren't a problem per se but as others have said, as with all training and kit changes, build up slowly. My Flites 195, 220 or 230 are all like slippers. Virtually no cushioning or support. But no probs, except some points that rub. Nothing to do with their lightness though. I tend not to train in them though but just keep them for racing. What size are you Bazo? You can try some of my 8.5s and 9s if any use? G |

Well done Steve - great to get under the sub 3.15, hoping there will be a blog on this, and what the Birmingham course was like (have done the half many years ago) Well done Gus, excellent time. Bazo - my experience, I ran my pb at the Duchy in Puma H streets which had a hole in. Paul a may remember I was umming and arring about it almost up to the start and changed between pairs at least twice to something chunkier and back again. For the early miles I flew, I far prefer the proprioception (I can't walk in things with chunky heels any more either) and they offer quicker recycling of the running action with something with very little heel/cushioning, because your stride shortens. In those days I relied on high cadence, something I struggle to do so now so much, and having a light shoe meant you have to be lighter on your feet (and I used to really slap the ground). HOWEVER after 20 miles it definitely bites a little bit, because your feet feel quite sensitive and every jolt hurts more than it normally would. I spent 7-8 months running in these before attempting the marathon in them, it wasn't a quick decision. If you adapt to running in lighter shoes go for it. At first I suffered calf issues, but now I don't. Hamstring issues of late are not to do with lighter shoes, I have imbalances and have always had a hip flexibility issue on one side. Now I prefer a little cushioning, but still lighter and thinner shoes than the average shoe. Current racing shoe is the Saucony type a. |

Yep I'm aware of the differences between track and XC spikes but I've compromised with a set of track long distance spikes to be used across both. Not ideal but think it'll work - used then yesterday with 12mm spikes in with no adverse issues. Couldn't justify two sets! |

Don't forget the colour, the brighter and more hideous the colour the faster the shoe . Science fact well about as factual as the math above

I definitely agree with that Joe - given my 20 places improvement at XC yesterday in hideous bright red/orange shoes! Lots of bright shoes on display here amongst the ladies: facebook.com |

Larkim - you've already done it but I'd have gone with XC spikes if I wanted something for both.
