Well done Gus - sounds like good pacing if WW is to be believed ;)

Will try and blog later or tomorrow, but yeah went not too bad. After the initial sort out in the first mile or so, no-one overtook, and I picked off maybe 20 or so runners with just steady running. Got in a good group of 4 or 5 from about 3-13 with some chat to help pass the miles. One by one they dropped off and second half I ran alone. Lost a bit of time in miles 24 and 25, but was able to re-gather for a faster 26.
Felt the usual cramping of the quads start around 20-22, but a bottle of HotShot seemed to just keep it at bay.
Weather wasn't as bad once we started as it was whilst waiting for the start - the sky was black, the trees were bent over with the wind, then it all magically calmed down 10 mins before the start. Was still a bit blowy, and an odd shower, but nowhere near as bad as it looked it would be.

Baz - as everyone else has ignored your shoe query........... ;-)

Racing shoes, like all other running shoes come in various flavours - some are super light ( really only for up to 10k unless you're an elite waif ), others are more like lighter everyday trainers, and lots inbetween.

Ones that are classified suitable for marathons generally seem to weigh about 220g'ish which is a decent saving over everyday high mileage trainers that tend to be in the 280- 320g range.

I wear mine for all road races, from parkrun upwards. When I lived in Edin I would also use them for track intervals and intervals on the canal etc, but now I do a lot more running on trails and don't have a track, so not used as much.

You could just keep them for races, but then they'd last for years and years, so I'd rather wear them more regularly than yet, plus it's nice to do intervals in lighter shoes, makes you feel faster ( even if you're not ! ).

The ones I wore today I'd never raced over 10k in, but had run up to 16miles - you generally know after a couple of runs if a shoe is comfortable or not I find.

Obviously you know your size in Asics so may be tempted to get whatever their offering is, but see if you can find somewhere with a few others like Adidas Adios, New Balance RC1400, Saucony Fastwich, etc, etc. And if your lottery ticket comes in you could always get a pair of the Nike Vapourfly 4% and be a twinny with WW ;-)

Nice work Steve and Gus.

Just got in. It's been a good day being out and about supporting.

There was a little carnage for the end of the half as the lead runners came through the slower marathoners (if 9:30 wave, they'd be looking at over 5 hours). There were still a quite a few of the marathoners out there so some dodging at speed was called for by the HMers. Not sure what the solution is as the HM starting even later probably doesn't work.

Had a similar shoe dilemma to baz in that I've now got a pair of spikes and have no intention of running in them at any other time than in XC races or the three or four track races I do per year. And spikes to be feel even more different than I expect flats do compared to training shoes.

My conclusion from that was that I'll just have to trust that wearing them only a few times is acceptable, but I suppose I'm running far shorter than marathons in them.

I wear New Balance spikes and I got new ones this season (different model from my old ones), the first time I wore them was in my season opener 1500m which was my PB race. I am comfortable in flat shoes though. My training shoe is the Puma Faas 100R. XC spikes again, first time I wear them running will be in warm up before race.

For road race shoes, I would want to do a few runs in them if new (my current race shoe is the Mizuno Wave Universe) and I generally do one run (usually the one that has my 2 days before race strides) with race shoes before any race.

Yeah, larkim I think you just have to accept that if you invest in XC spikes, then your cost/mile is going to be somewhat higher than your regular trainers.

Most XC courses you can get away with something like Inov8 Mudclaw or X-Talon, which will have a broader potential use if you have any hills nearby, but XC spikes are lighter than fell shoes, so depends on how serious you are.

XC spikes are not the same track spikes (of which there are several types) Larks...

Baz - I run full time in "racing shoes". No they dont need wearing in as such any more than any other shoe, but you will need to be careful if you go from clown shoes to racing shoes because it takes a while for your feet and lower legs to adjust to doing more of the work. I run in Nike Zoom Streak LT3 (the newer versions are too cushioned for me).
