Poker at least if you're skilful you can reasonably expect to make money. Day-trading, not so much.

He went to a 2 day training thing in New York earlier this year. Has run a dummy pretend money account but trading in as if real for a year and has made enough to libe off. Not for me. Feels too much like gambling! I wish him well of course. G

I have a friend that was on the dole straight after uni. He took his payout to a casino in Birmingham every time and played his system for a maximum of twenty minutes - enough for a few roulette spins on several tables simultaneously. At twenty minutes he would cash up, after eating several of the free sandwiches and snacks thoughtfully provided. In the end (after nine weeks, IIRC) he stopped after being ahead every time - not because he was losing, but the possibility of losing all his money just became intolerable. Friend of mine while studying for our Accountancy passed his first year exams but didn’t want to stay.
Rather than leave, he worked out that if he was fucking useless no one would book him on jobs.
He could then clock on as ‘unassigned’, get paid and do what he actually enjoyed: studying and playing the stock market. He’d do that until lunchtime, then have 3 or 4 pints and go home.
He kept it up for over a year, made a fair pile of money, described it as the best year of his life then landed a job with a top stockbroker.

First day of retirement today.
Walked into town. Paid off the remaining 6 months of mortgage.
Oddly enough the feeling is ... flat.

Statistically speaking, card counting works. If you are clever enough and you can get away with it for long enough.
