Back in the olden days some enlightened GP practices factored sabbaticals into their partnership agreements, but that was when partnerships were stable and highly financially binding, which had its own problems. Getting bought out of a partnership I was leaving was a laborious and unpleasant business.

In my last place I got a nice engraved glass from the patient participation group. And knives thrown at my back by the remaining partners.

I just completed 10 years at my present job, I got a pin badge worth about 10p attached to a letter of thanks.

I took it home to show my wife because I wanted to give her a good laugh, then I think it ended up in the bin.

At 10 years I got a different coloured ID badge and lanyard :-)

I’m almost at 11 now - next stop is a badge colour change at 15, after which I plan to leave.

If I’d have had 5 years service I’d have got a platinum jubilee medal / commemorative coin; there was another one last year for a special operation we did - we are instructed to not sell them on eBay to Walts!

I’ve done 29 years at my job they gave a £250 voucher for 25 years and a posh hotel do. You get a lot more for 40 years.

£15 per year for 25 years (so £375) and 40 years (£600).
I'll be getting my £600 in October and then another £600 when I retire in December. A
Think I've said before that I've spent my entire working life with one company developing a single suite of software.

Right I have finally got the form I need to request transfer value from my old workplace pension with Aviva into the local government pension scheme.

My gut feeling is that this won’t be the right thing to do, but it is worth finding out for sure. I can only do this in the first year of LGPS membership so I have until March 2023

Advantages:

The transfer in would presumably “buy more service / pension” within LGPS

Disadvantages:

The value of this pension is 15% down since Putin invaded Ukraine.

I lose the flexibility of having two separate pots - being able to access the Aviva one while still working for example
