I’ve never had the problem of not using annual leave in my old job I used to buy 5 extra days. This job needs one of us around at all times, no option to buy leave (although colleague has an arrangement that she has 2 weeks unpaid each year) and getting time off is so difficult, last year I had 6 days left which they allowed me to carry and covered my Jordan trip but this year even after our November trip and Xmas I’ll have 4 days left and colleague wants to be off in lead up to Xmas. Hopefully I’ll be on medical leave if my op goes to plan and I can carry the extra days again.

We always had a certain amount of unused leave to carry-over. Helped by the habit of going to conferences and working visits in pleasant locations where we managed to take some free holiday (usually without bending rules too much). Vienna was always a favourite, Hawaii and San Francisco were good when we lived in Japan…and no one noticed when we took half days off here and there anyway.

I have always carried some days forward within what’s allowed. Think I carried three or four into this year, but I plan to use them all up

I used to work between Christmas and New Year when the offices were closed to generate extra days off in lieu. I didn't get much work done but I did get 8 hours peace every day. The other thing I did, just before a management buy out, was change my contract to add an extra 5 days holiday and to increase the maximum holiday from 10 days to 15. I quickly booked a 3 week holiday before the MBO was finalised. |

I worked with the European Space Agency most of my working life, and one of the guys we dealt with there retired 6months early on his accumulated holiday entitlement. Might have changed now but at the time there was no restriction or time limit on carrying forward holiday entitlement

I'm afraid I have missed a lot of pages of this thread. Just popping in to ask @Sigh to update the sidebar, as my main employment will end on 30 August. I'm going to call myself retired with effect from that date, although there will be one or two ongoing very small part-time bits and pieces to keep me out of trouble.
