There aren't many who say "I wish I worked longer".

I wouldn't have minded being more successful, but that's another matter :-)

Sounds like you had some amazing experiences through work though JDA.

Suppose it depends on how you quantify success.

There’s always more we can wish to do/achieve but knowing when to stop and being able too i feel
is more important

I can’t grumble at what I’ve done in this job I’ve pushed and grown but sadly they never rewarded me with the right grade which does impact on my pension. I’ve asked again for the regrade let’s see if not it makes the leaving early decision easier.

I once made the mistake of saying that in earshot of a co-worker who was hugely offended by it. I should have known better. He is a workaholic who struggles to use up his holiday entitlement. He and his family go once a year to CenterParcs and the rest of the time he only takes days off to do big DIY projects.

I think that co-worker needs to hear that repeatedly until he gets the message.

It saddens me that some people are so defined by who they are in work, without it they have no identity. I work with plenty of these (especially my boss).

It does make you wonder why Biden is so keen to carry on at 81

Sigh
Not long after I handed in my 'notice of retirement', I had a call from my boss' boss, a nice chap in Sweden who I'd known for about 15 years. I'm a few years younger than him, too. In response to his general surprise, I said something along the lines of, "I've achieved all I can reasonably expect to, and the things I can't fix aren't going to change anytime soon. It's time to step aside, let someone else have a go."

I haven't regretted it once, in fact I'm sure I would have become bitter and angry had I stayed longer.

He is in quite a senior role now, so I suppose it has paid off for him. He might make Head of IT before he retires - he's about 10 years younger than me.

But as I've probably said before, one of the former Heads of IT used to come in at 7am and not leave until 7pm... and he was axed as soon as management at the top changed. They'd got the equivalent of an extra year of free overtime from him in the meantime.
