Rollercoaster indeed. I don’t know how it works down there but we have a tiered camhs system here. Our Primary Mental Health Workers (tier 2) work alongside schools and do early intervention stuff. Tier 3 CAMHS pick up the more complex stuff. They never leave their clinics and we struggle to get them to pick anything up. I reckon the PMHW service would pick littleD up based on the stuff you’ve shared here. It would then be escalated if necessary.

Thanks HP

She's off school again. Came in last night complaining of a bad headache and spent the evening in bed. She seems genuinely ill but how much is her mental state? Feel utterly lost.

Mental state affects physical state. Sending huge hugs in the absence of anything useful xxx

Just had two letters in the same envelope about LittleD's attendance. Threatening letters. Talking about fines and Early Intervention Service. Does anyone know what that is? So now we have:

1. Attendance - from the Deputy Head
2. Punctuality - on report to someone else, can't remember who
3. Homework - has targets from the Head of Year but isn't doing them
4. Safeguarding and possible CAMHS referral - this has gone quiet
5. Counselling - 2 more sessions, I think
6. Three lots of removal from lessons - a different Deputy Head and the Inclusion Manager

The school don't seem to talk to one another. I asked the person who called me about punctuality to please not put her on report as I feel that there are so many sanctions she has no incentive to behave well. He did it anyway without informing me. I only found out because she told me.

Her absences are all genuine illnesses that might have their roots in mental health issues or not. And because the school can't do maths, they can't work out that a few days missed in Sept makes the percentage very low.

I am angry and worried and upset in equal measure and have no idea what to do. All the while I have an unhappy and confused child to parent.

Linds i sympathise.

When we had issues with school attendance, amongst other things, and a terrible scattergun approach form the school to dealing with it, we tried to work with the head of year but found her to be the biggest issue.

we made an appointment to see the head, and she was wonderful. She listened, understood, and dealt with the internal issues. We had a number of future meetings with her and she helped enormously.

Go straight to the top, and request a meeting with the head.

If that doesn't work speak to the chair of governors.

Thank you. The Head of Year is generally good, and the only person who I think sees LittleD as a whole person. However she is not keeping on top of all the other stuff and often hides behind 'regulations'. As do they all. I might ask to see the head.

I’m so sorry Linds. It seems like the school are adding to your stress. They are getting their priorities all wrong as far as I’m concerned. Health and wellbeing trump attendance and punctuality. HWB trumps everything in my book. Sanctions rarely work in these cases.

Thank you. They definitely are. It really helps to have the support here. I don't think that sanctions are working At All and that's why I have asked them to ease up.

Sadly it sounds like they are now threatening you with sanctions. At least I presume fines and early intervention service is aimed at you not LittleD. The English system is a bit punitive.
