In fact, to complicate matter further, I don't think that course measurers actually measure the elevation of start or finish points - certainly not the accuracy that the measurement wheel does, or using specialist tools as a surveyor would. Elevation is estimated I think from OS maps / contours, but that definitely introduces a decent margin of error.

Bloody hell Chris! I can't quite match that but our County Champs is often held on this course strava.com Apparently it used to be a "sporting" 3 miles but the Notts AAA wanted an evening 5k to have as the champs and the only way it could be squeezed into the park was to move the start up the hill - yes the same hill that you then don't have to run back up at the finish, lovely The opening mile is now insane and I think I was on sub-5 pace before it kicks up at the end - the rest of the course is pretty undulating so it's not "that" fast overall but it is great fun although damn near impossible to pace properly. I'm having a pre-marathon blast at my local parkrun on Saturday, its not the quickest so sub-19 would be good, course best of 18.42 would be great |

On Po10 they have a symbol "a" which means:- "course slightly downhill (net drop is over 1.0 metres/km but less than 5.0 metres/km). Such performances are still eligible for rankings but not for records" I think really that should be a flag against the Mid Cheshire 5k course. As for the Newstead one Uyuni - they don't seem to have a symbol for "like running from the top of Everest downhill" |

Going by the contours Newstead is about 60 m net downhill, and all of that's in the first km which is pretty ridiculous in a 5k, but nothing to flag it on Po10. The first time I did it I panicked a bit when I glanced at my watch after half a mile and it said 5:30 pace - then a fell running woman from my club, who's normally a fair way behind me in races came bounding past and I knew I'd cocked it up. The gradually uphill 2nd mile soon takes the wind out of your sails but it is a right good laugh. Would love to do the Cheshire one as that feels a lot more "legit", isn't it the often the England Champs or similar? |

Yes my mile record from 5th Avenue is record with that symbol BUT its fairly hilly all round so I dont think you gain anything from it to be honest. (I've run much faster on a track time trial!) |

Yep, its the English champs this year, second time its had that honour. Its a self described "fast" course which does live up to the billing. And with a 3 mile jog to the start from home, that's a perfect warm up built in for me!

Yeah someone mentioned Boston and I think heartbreak hill is enough to wipe out most people's aspirations of a pb on that marathon course. I find the GAP paces on |

If anyone is in London and fancies some good 5ks I can recommend: uk.srichinmoyraces.org (monday nights in the Summer) And serpentine.org.uk Friday lunchtime once a month Both have fast fields for dragging you around. |

Did 10x 800 with 60s rest tonight at Track. Averaged 3:01, which I’m happy with. That’s good for 18:50 if I could do 6.25 in a row with no rest!
