Also the definition of jogs a bit is patchy

3600 a year Big miles 06 - 08 ( first leg break)

2300 a year 9 - 11 ( 2nd broken leg Jan 2012)

Told to retire from distance running due to ankle deterioration

700 a year 12 - 13

1615 a year from 14 to 20 (2014 - again told to stop due to spine problem)

21 to current avg 1200 but only 500 this year (Ankle deteriorated 2023 causing proper cut back)

Reality is 2023 2024 is less than 900 miles a year and only speed work 5 sub 19 min parkruns with a single one being sub 18

I wish I could suffer like you seem able to GOBI. I'm relatively injury free, train comfortably hard but struggle to find that much more in races.

I've 4 years on you in my favour and just can't compute running the times you do off relatively little running. I guess the engine is there from the bike training though!

Good effort too @larkim, sounds like you really dug in for your 17:190, glad it's reignited the mojo.

Thanks Brunski! Feels a long time ago now.

Sticking with the League races over the winter, raced one 5-ish miler at just under 6:50 pace, and last weekend a 9.8k (!) race at just faster than that pace, both races with reasonably significant climbs in there.

The second was just a few seconds faster than October 2022, the previous time I ran it, and I paced it better but still struggled a bit with the "why I am bothering" thoughts in the last couple of miles. Got through it though. Interestingly finished 41 places lower than I did in October 2022, despite posting a slightly faster time. Shoes?

I reckon I am probably at least back in sub 20 shape if I wanted to bother with that. Got a 5 miler in early December on a hilly race track which will also be "fun"; usually blowing a gale up on the cliffs of Anglesey!

Jeez sorry I didn't notice your 5k was at the end of August.... This thread is another that's gone a bit dormant prior to Gobi breathing a bit of life into it.

Come to think of it I've seen the mojo returning with your revent strava runs 👍🏻

I'm sure I've been here before but I really need to have everything lined up on the day to properly rinse myself in a race. One bad split, get passed by the wrong person and my head starts wandering and I'm prone to tempo'ing it in.

Nike racing has too many unknowns to let the effort drop.

I punctured off the line on Sunday and dropped out the top 30, rode back to 13th

Still a bad day but a good recovery from disaster.

Running I often focus on my effort and ignore people passing me. I can't do anything about them anyway

This is where I think I have the benefit of age on my side. I know I'm not going to compete with the front runners anymore at 57, so it's just me against me and so that's pretty much all I concentrate on right up until race day. Then it's a case of executing the well-rehearsed (in my head) plan and maybe having a mental play with the few people around me on the day.

Think I'm coming around to this way of thinking. However for a local race I've been racing the same people for maybe 5-10 years and in that time I've aged, peaked and am now on the general decline (on the whole). I'm not winning races, but can compete for age group prizes.

I've a 10k coming up and may get near PB shape. If I am I'll give it a whirl and see how close I can get. HR trends suggest I'll be close.
