Iffley Festival of Miles for me where the plan is to double up. First the mile where the plan is to officially register a sub 5 mile. Not looking for an all out race but want to work on kick so plan is 5 min pace then kick (if I was brave, I'd go 5:05 pace then kick to sub 5). Then 3000m for some quality training. Start times are currently only 20 mins apart so it will be interesting. |

There's a 5000m in Milton Keynes in two weeks on Saturday, sounds like it will be a very good event. fetcheveryone.com/viewracedetails.php?id=2455404 |

I'm in for the MK 5000 PB Special, but some way off sub 18. 18:45 if I'm lucky.

I'm racing a 5 miler this evening, with a forecast temperature of 29C. If you see no further posts from me on Fetch, you'll know it didn't go quite according to plan... Actually, I'm really not sure how to approach this. That's a pretty fierce temperature to be racing in, but I'd normally complete the distance comfortably inside 30 minutes, so that's not too long to survive the heat. Set out at normal pace and see how it goes? Set out conservatively, with respect to the heat, and if so, how conservatively - 10-15 seconds per mile slower than usual? |

Best of luck J2R, I don’t envy you I’ve a bit of experience here from the last couple of months of racing in ridiculous (for the UK) heat. Both 10ks when I was in what I felt was the best shape every. The first one I went off at recent 5 mile PB thinking I’d be able to hang on – well unsurprisingly I couldn’t so had a very unpleasant 40 minutes staggering over the line a good 3 minutes slower than hoped. The second I went off a good 15 secs/mile slower and held that pace throughout for a great run. Again a couple of mins down on where I ”should” have been but it was a whole lot more fun, and even didn’t mind missing my actual PB by one second. So go with your second option and forget any chance of heroics |

Uyuni, I think that's sound advice. What is more, I'm actually quite likely to follow it and not doing anything too daft! It's pretty clear that these are not PB conditions, and, given that, my aim should really be for a good placing and just avoid a time which is too shameful. It's a long while since I took over 30 minutes for a 5 miler but maybe I'll just have to live with that this evening . I think I'm probably on sub-29 form under good conditions. I think I'll maybe try to stick just inside 6:00 pace this evening and if that's proving too problematic, slow down a tad. I know who my main age group rival is for this race, so I'll keep an eye on him!
