Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,

Sharkie - my previous pilates instructor used to give us various challenges while balancing, such as throwing and catching a ball to each other or passing the ball behind our backs, and under the knee of the raised leg. All good fun.

I agree Shades.

In my recent ballet classes at the end of a sequence at the barre the teacher will say, 'Check your balance' which involves taking your hand off the bar usually to hands overhead in 5th (a big oval just in front of your face). At this point you are usually standing on demi pointe ie front ball of foot. (various foot positions) This is harder than flat feet obvs. So a different sort of challenge.

THEN the teacher says, 'Look right, look centre, look left, look centre.' Surprisingly difficult!

Sharkie - I'd love to do a basic ballet class, for the strength and balance elements.

I gave up ballet when I was about 9 years old

Post lockdown central there seem to be adult ballet classes everywhere, Shades

I'm an almost complete beginner - I did less than a year aged eight. I absolutely love it - a physical and mental challenge like no other.

Sharkie - I just had a look on the Internet and there is a place down the road from me that do adult ballet classes. I'm reluctant to pay out for classes as I have unlimited classes with my leisure club membership. I might suggest they put on a class there.

Well done Pix. We're not allowed to look down when we do balance stuff, just focus on something at eye level.

I like to stand on one leg and pass a tennis ball from hand to hand over my head. Also, bend at the waist on one leg, pushing your hips back and passing the ball from hand to hand just below the knee.

Not in Tesco, though. I don't think that would be welcomed.

So this is fun. I've always thought I have decent balance so have given this a go in the office just now. I have a standing desk (ooh la la) so it didn't look too weird.

I can feel that I left the hips drop and am not engaging the glutes (a perennial issue), so I was trying hard to fix that. Moving around, drinking tea, looking sideways etc was all doable, as was eyes closed but that was much more tiring.

Definitely going to try and do more of this as it feels like a great warm-up exercise!

About This Thread

Maintained by Derby Tup
Sharkie's current blog has piqued my interest in standing on one leg for training to increase proprioception. It's a great little exercise to improve off-road running skill, or recover from lower leg injuries especially twisted ankles

A wobble board is useful but you can do it without equipment while brushing your teeth, queuing for a coffee etc

My real interest is improving my 'eyes closed' time
