The issue is that your ‘advisers, are directly the President’s appointees. When the big guy goes, their own gig is up - it was in their interests to form a protective scrum around him, and lie/deceive for as long as they could. There were many stories of how even most democrats were kept away from Biden, press conferences limited and scripted, and off teleprompter moments restricted to nothing. He probably started his term at 90%, was probably 40-50% by the time of the debate. I suspect Trump will also go rapidly downwards from c90% over this term. They’ll try to hide it; the left will try to expose it. Complete role reversal ironically. |

Not sure this shows where he is on that scale, but I found this footage of him dictating tweets rather wild. Couldn’t work out whether it was stage managed or not. x.com |

@larkim his advisers were ignoring internal polling that said Trump would win with 400 electoral college votes. There seems to have been lots of self preservation going on!

I heard a commentator say that the issue with Biden wasn't his ability to be president, but with his ability to campaign. Even for much younger people, all that travel and remembering the names of the thousands of donors you meet behind the scenes and doing all the speeches is tiring. Biden didn't just have age to deal with, but all the work of being president as well. So being tired, exhausted and confused isn't unexpected. They said that being president is much easier than running to remain president. As president you're kept in one place largely and using your experience to make decisions whilst others do all the legwork. So Biden was functioning well as being a president, but just lost the ability to actually run as one. |

As always with these things, would love to know what the "inside" info on the Welby position was. He will have known that the report was coming, he'll have known that his knowledge about the issues was present, so why did he not automatically assume that it would mean there would be an unavoidable need for him to resign the position? I know people like to cling on to power, of course. But Welby has struck me broadly as being a dignified individual. And of course, the issue is - him going doesn't really make a blind bit of difference. I'm often drawn back to the current day almost-faux outrage about church abuse in the 70s and 80s. When Dick Emery, Dave Allen, etc were producing their output using typical "tropes" about the clergyman and their choir boys, it was based on a widespread knowledge that abuse went on in institutions like the CoE or the RC church. And as a nation we laughed about it. Now we seem to think that we've uncovered some hitherto unknown secret. Same with celebrity abuse of young girls. John Peel was giving newspaper interviews in 1989 about how he was having relations with a 13yo girl and he was happy to dole out that information to the public. https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-lGin17YYxLo/VEqFRbKgngI/AAAAAAAADsg/OKOErB95Yrs/s1600/Peel_SC051189(4).jpg From today's perspective, it was always unacceptable. And I'm sure there were voices at the time making the same point. But not loudly enough because most of the population didn't care. |

Sue Gray not taking up the new role. She shouldn't be a story at all, tbh. Her memoires could be good though. Must admit I thought she was going to be a huge asset to Starmer, clearly there is something that doesn't fit well though. bbc.co.uk |
