Even beyond the political accountability (and how unsuitable all recent home secs have been), I don't get how this didn't raise all kinds of red flags across govt.

A 2375% overspend is fairly significant

That isn't just a £7.6bn overspend.

They spent 7,900,000,000 instead of 320,000,000. Is that right?

Nearly 25 times their budget, how does that happen?

I know we are making the argument that government isn't like a normal household budget, and we can print money from the magic money tree.

It would be nice for a modicum of control though.

I guess the overarching principle being applied was "don't fess up to massive overspends because Joe Wetherspoons might conclude we are a clueless bunch of stiffs who couldn't run a bath, let alone manage a complex situation like this."

I was reading Rory Stewart's book about his time as a minister and I was highly non-shocked to see that new ministers generally give less than a single toss about the previous guy's policies, and that the previous guys took zero interest in giving the new guy the benefit of their "wisdom". No wonder the civil servants came across as arsey and resistant to change.

What's the reason for the overspend on asylum? I presume the budget was based on some estimated numbers.

Could it be the actual number of asylum seekers is more than the budget?
Could it be that spending more on asylum means that the government is doing more for asylum seekers in terms of housing, welfare, medical aid and legal services?

According to the Guardian the budget was stated to be about £110 million pounds and then any “overspend” was claimed from a contingency fund.

Looks like it was an underhand way to keep the actual costs off the books. Dishonest in the extreme.
