Yes the Union Flag was still predominant at the 1990 World Cup, by 1996 Euros it had gone completely. It was between these two tournaments that the FA cancelled the old ‘England members club’ which had the usual knuckle staggers with enormous accumulated points getting tickets every away game. The revised England Fans restarted everything and allowed a new type of fan to get a foothold. |

The politics of sport from these islands is rather fascinating, I think. We have four nations for football, one of them being Northern Ireland (and, of course, the Republic of Ireland has its own team, as a completely separate country). But in rugby we have a single Irish team, encompassing both north and south. Must be very confusing to continentals.

I'd never clocked that before about there being no NI RU team!

That's why they don't play the national anthem (except when they play in Dublin). They have a specially composed song instead. (Rugby) |

I thought they played both the anthems of NI and the Republic of Ireland and Irish Ruby games?

Nope. They play Ireland's Call. In Dublin they play the Irish Anthem too. en.m.wikipedia.org |

Northern Ireland doesn't have a national anthem. They play God Save the King at Northern Irish football matches. Though as was suggested in previous posts on here, my knowledge of Irish history and current states is somewhat lacking; so I'm not really in much of a position to guess much further what they play for what event, similar to the nuances of the flag issue. |

I do think it would help the union if we only fielded one football team. I know we would lose 3 of our 4 FIFA votes but it would give a sense of unity. I would say the same about all sports but I’m not sure rugby, netball or cricket have enough other countries playing to be able to lose 2 or 3 of them. |
