"A 90-minute pitch perfect speech and that one mistake will strike more chords than the rest." Nevertheless, he's an increasingly doddery old man who shouldn't be within a million miles of the presidency. Just about the only worse candidate imaginable is his opponent. |

Except it wasn't pitch perfect, the "lauded" foreign policy bit might be music to US exceptionalist ears, but for those who give a shit about Gaza or want less half-arsedness about Ukraine, it was thin gruel indeed.

It's gone now. Whatever Biden does from now on, the perception is that he's a doddery old man and he cannot ever recover from that. Not only will he not win over wavering Republicans but he will lose Democrat votes. He has to be persuaded to step aside, if it is not too late, or the nightmare of a second Trump presidency will inevitably come to pass.

Again, a lot of that'll come down to media perception, etc. Only been a few days since an American-made bomb was dropped on a school with kids playing football in Khan Younis in Palestine. Yet Biden's biggest threat comes from calling somebody the wrong name, which if we admitted we all do some more regularly than others. |

It doesn't matter whether it's right or wrong, paulcook. Biden might be sharp as a tack but there's now no way he will convince enough voters of that to win the election in November. If he ploughs on stubbornly, he gives America Trump.

He needs to prove repeatedly and conclusively that he is able to convince voters away from Trump. Either that or stand down. The third way is to limp on, with very limited efforts to prove he has the ability or the vigour to win. My guess is he will go after the convention, Harris is crowned and then it's hope for the best, because she has a mountain to climb. It isn't looking good at the moment. |

All she needs to do is to get the 2020 voters out. Trump has lost voters since then and gained none. The problem is that it currently seems (not 100% clear from polls), that Biden has lost more.

Personally I think she will be a good scrapper and knock a few lumps out of Trump but, y’know, American voters…

I would hope that they will be able to find someone young and vibrant and exciting to pull in, who doesn't have any negative baggage. Kamala Harris as pretty poor approval ratings (unfortunately) so I'm sure she'd lose to the orange one.

She was three points ahead of Trump on the IPSOS poll this week...
