Re the 'once in a generation' thing. This annoys me as I don't think the SNP ever said that it was a once in a generation vote, more focussing on the opportunity they saw. Its a bit of fake news created to suit some arguments. A bit like the only way to remain in the EU is to vote No......Everyone knew an EU referendum was planned, but also everyone knew there was some truth in this as an Independent Scotland ironically would have left the EU long before the UK actually does. I think its better to make the point that Scotland voted clearly to stay and as yet there is no clear majority desire to change that. If there is then we should get another vote. I don't see a majority of seats as a mandate when its based on a minority of votes as its pretty clear that the outcome of a referendum would likely be No. |

Lancaster is a duchy, yes, like Luxembourg, perhaps, and was ruled almost autonomously and independently from the Plantagenet crown when it was first declared as a duchy. Ironically, it probably has one of the strongest claims of independence from England, having been subsumed into England by Henry Bolingbroke when he seized the English throne as Henry IV.

Not subsumed into England. Subsumed into the English crown.

My memory is that Cameron said it and Salmond didn't disagree. Anyhows Brexit pretty much kicks that argument in the sea. |

I thought this was moderately interesting, in the sense of trying to get an understanding whether the Scottish population are of one mind about their attitude to self determination:- whatscotlandthinks.org Essentially, 57% of the popluation describe themselves as "Scottish not British" or "More Scottish than British" vs 23% "Equally Scottish and British" and 14% "More British than Scottish" or "British not Scottish". Would it be fair to say that 37% of the popluation are therefore saying that they value the Britishness and might represent a sizeable proportion who think that the question of independence just shouldn't be on the table? If the BBC news was reporting on a secession movement in another part of the world and they said support for indepedence was around 60% with 40% not wanting to secede, my instinct would be that that would be a struggle to get past the status quo. Most referendums on independence (most commonly in former colonial territories) have votes in favour of independence in the high 90%s - is there a realistic prospect of Scotland getting anywhere close to say 66% in favour? |

I'm still slightly annoyed that parts of Yorkshire are now in Lancashire. And we didn't even fight a proper war over it. |

It's worse, because in return we ended up with Todmorden being in Yorkshire.

There's some fighting talk on here now, so time to declare my allegiances. Although I've lived in Norfolk for decades, I was born and grew up in Lancashire. It's clearly time for me to work up a visceral hatred of people from Yorkshire, something which presumably lies latent within me.
