Also has a bigger population than NI or Wales, and not far short of Scotland.

Trying not to chuckle at DeeGee's comments on Lancs. Especially since I am an expatriate (Wessex) Southerner living in Yorkshire.....

If you remember a long time back (in the exciting days after the Brexit referendum result was announced) I did predict the possible "Balkanisation" of Britain along these lines- a Celtic Union of Scotland, Wales, Cornwall and possibly Ireland, and/or a Council of the North (with the North starting in Leicestershire). It was tongue in cheek then. Now i'm not so sure.

Indeed DeeGee. Hence my instinct that Scotland is not really much different to a county in the context of the UK as a whole. Though it never had a monarch, just a Duke, I think.

Lark - "a Catholic in Northern Ireland might very well have an issue with declaring that they are "British" on an official document".

You're right of course - but it generally doesn't arise, because they are probably Irish (by 'feel', but also legally). Anyone born here can choose either Nationality, and hold either passport.

Also think Scotland had some Monarchs, one of whom we may have borrowed to start this all off.

Ah yes, of course - I'd honestly never thought that through properly. So most NI Catholics will not hold a British passport, and instead hold RoI one?

Yes, Scotland had plenty of Monarchs - it was Lancashire I was saying had none (though the House of Lancaster did of course).

There's no argument that for close on 800 years there was a Kingdom of Scotland with a clear divide between that Kingdom and that of England.

I'm raising the flag of the White Horse Rampant!

Not even conquered by William the Bastard, where I grew up.
