Has there ever been a sovereign state comprising the whole of Ireland? I don't think so. Not sure you can use that as a valid test

Sturgeon has always been very clear that her vision of nationalism is a civic one, based on the people living there, far removed from the ethnocentric exclusionary vision of many in England. Of course that's helped by the fact that there isn't really a clear definition of what Scottish might really be in terms of nationality. The various sports make up their own definitions to suit themselves AFAIK, and the legal stuff is primarily based on where you live and act rather than where you were born.

IMO it's therefore a significant misjudgement to reject the notion of scottish nationalism, based on what can be seen of english nationalism. That's not to say it is all sweetness and light north of the border...

"the current border of Northern Ireland as I understand it doesn't properly correspond to the traditional province of Ulster"

This is correct, and not especially widely understood I think. The province of Ulster includes Donegal, Cavan and Monaghan counties (so 9 in total). Partition drew the boundary just around the 6 that make up NI.

Using 'Ulster' as a shorthand for Northern Ireland is either lack of knowledge (I'd give the man on the Clapham omnibus the benefit of the doubt), or trolling (Unionists here, or Unionist-friendly sources like the Daily Telegraph).

Good LOL at DeeGee's last line :-)

I’ve already stated on this thread that Ulster has nine counties. The flag of which is yellow with the red hand and not the bastardised version flown in the occupied six counties.

Does the concept of Ulster (9 counties, split across 2 states currently) as a "country" have any traction in those counties?
