I will leave the thread for a bit. Nationalism makes me confrontational. I think that's probably because it is.

So, TM, are you advocating the reunification of Ireland within the UK then? I'm pretty sure there must be people still alive in the UK who where alive at the time of the Partition.

I'd have no truck with a unified Ireland outside or inside of the UK. Others obviously object to unification in any form.

Agree simbil - the one thing most likely to spark a feeling that people want to take control is to take away an opportunity to say whether they want to take control!
I'm in two minds about the UK govts response on the referendum. Part of me is inclined to say that there is at least a reasonable case for arguing that a decisive vote shouldn't be re-opened too frequently simply because it is destabising to the nation (UK) as a whole. But equally, within the context of how the UK govt has approoached referendums in the past and the imminent Brexit departure, I can see that there is a realistic proposition of getting a fresh vote with a very different outcome now. If it is accepted that Scottish independence should be subject to Scottish electors, refusing the opportunity now doesn't seem at all fair.

I'm actually a half-breed by ancestry and after the first 18y in Scotland have spent my entire adult life outside of Scotland (mostly England but a good chunk abroad). I don't really have strong views on the question of Scottish independence (and didn't vote in the ref), but I can certainly understand the appeal.
I would however find it funny if my brexity anti-scot English mother was forced to apply for the right to stay in her own home after Scexit, despite living there for almost 60 years, and hope that she had good enough documentation to be accepted. As that as what she has just imposed on millions of resident EU citizens.
Well, actually, I would find it horrifying, but there is precisely zero possibility of it happening.

Tomo - I hear a lot of 'all nationalism is bad' stuff.
You can be independent, internationalist and progressive. Norway only became independent in 1905 and is all of those things. Look at the Baltic states.
I don't get why it need be confrontational.

Can you clarify what you mean, Stander?
"have no truck with" usually means you wouldn't want any dealings or association with something - is that what you meant? Your second sentence makes me think you didn't mean that.
