Whether it would work or not (probably not) is surely beside the point.

I guess we've yet to see what the Corbyn opposition policy detail is on schools (not that that matters much at the moment!), but New Labour and the Conservatives were pretty much on similar lines for better or worse, which is academies (albeit with marginal ideological differences). So less central control and more parental choice, the choice being between schools often as much down to their own specific subject strengths as location.

The fundamental flaw in grammar schools for me is that the quality of education a child gets can be in part determined by the financial means of the parent to spend on tutors. Those in favour of them don't see this as any sort of issue at all, but it is the major reason why the Conservatives aren't rushing to overturn the ban on new grammar schools. Like all politicians, if they can find a route of least resistance that achieves the same result, they'll take it, and they've found one.

Today's announcement won't open the floodgates, but it will lead to new grammar schools in Conservative heartlands and pacify the right of the party, so job done whilst maintaining the fiction that every child has equality of opportunity - don't expect the government to be shouting about every new grammar school opening though!

Premierfella - actually academies and free schools are under direct central government control (with powers then "devolved" down to them), rather than being accountable to Local Educational Authorities.

Aspects of inequality:

1. Inherited Wealth
2. Housing
3. Transport
4. Education
5. Employment/Employability
6. Health
7. Social
8. Sport
9. Food/Nutrition
10. Energy
11. Culture/Entertainment

In no particular order. I'm sure there are others.

Direct central control yes, but effectively government control is about as hands-off as you can get in the education sphere isn't it? (certainly compared with LA control).

Unless the school is doing something completely off the wall or spending beyond its means, they are left to get on with things pretty much as they want, as long as they can justify their actions.

"I guess we've yet to see what the Corbyn opposition policy detail is on schools" - the fact that he divorced his wife over this issue would lead me to suspect that he would not be in support of Grammar Schools

No, to my mind it's the opposite - schools are more open to political interference (see Gove) and the over-domineering behaviour of Ofsted.

Whereas LEAs could buffer schools a bit from govt interference and political changes (i.e. Labour to Tory and vice versa), that's now being removed and thus resulting in more disruption and pressure as it's becoming more of a political football.

A lot (although to be fair not all) teachers I know who've spanned both LEAs and the current system say it's now bureaucratic and teachers are submitted to constant and intense pressure to hit targets and other nonsense.
