<q>financial offer for what (that is compatible with recognising their sovereignty)?<q> Anything is better than invading. That's for the diplomats to figure out. It's probably all bluster and bullshit anyway that won't amount to anything. |

New Republic seems to think it's all nonsense. (I love the headline by the way) "Trump Sends Idiot Son on Futile Mission" newrepublic.com |

jdawayinamanger wrote: larkim gonna larkim OK, fair - but contradict me please? If Greenland does achieve independence, how does a country comprising a land mass that size with a population of 55,000 (assuming it becomes a non-EU, non-NATO nation) even consider defending itself against a country as powerful in so many ways as the USA. And would the international community be able to muster enough opposition to any type of invasion to repel the US? That doesn't seem credible. Greenland's only current defence against the US (or indeed Russia) is the Denmark "link". If they willingly give that up (which all the polls in the country say they really, really want to) they become incredibly vulnerable. The USA could happily claim control of large swathes of Greenland if it really was a tactical / mining asset for the USA. Greenlanders may want independence, which presumably also means they don't want to become part of the USA. But if they achieve independence that could very well be taken out of their hands? |

I don't think anyone can say where this idiocy will lead if left unchecked. What's truly depressing is that this whole Canada nonsense is already being echoed by so many US politicians. Their moral compasses have been entirely submerged by their obeisance to a delusional 78 year old toddler. |

Having lived in Canada most take great pride in being Canadian. Last time the US tried to annex Canada in 1812 they were defeated.

larkim, my original point was that Trump was threatening force and the BBC was pretending he wasn't. You now seem to acknowledge that Trump is threatening force so it seems you agree with me that the BBC misread the situation.

Never suggest to a Canadian that they are "basically the same" as Americans...
