I'm sure you all noticed that the BBC started out by sanewashing Trump to the extent of claiming he had suggested *buying* Greenland (something he never even hinted at in this recent outburst) before he explicitly threatened force.

It's very Emperor's New Clothes, isn't it. Who knows what the next few years will bring. It's quite worrying.

Remember that wall he built last time? Trump is a popularist so needs to represent the people against those with power. Claiming there are evil forces which prevent him from doing things is all part of his act. It will be shown as woke, socialist Denmark stopping them from doing something. If they wanted Greenland as a trading route they could get the benefits of their ports without buying the country. It's all just a sham to make the people repressed by them feel they have their oppressors too. |

Yes larkim I know that *more than 5 years ago* he talked about buying Greenland, but that's "something he never even hinted at in this recent outburst".

If you watch the news conf back, he didn't really create any "recent outburst", at least not about Greenland. He said in the main body of his "speech" that he believed the US acquiring Greenland was a national security imperative, and linked it to their independence movement. That's no different to what he's said before. A journo then asked him to rule out military force, and his answer there is clearly focussed on the Panama canal rather than Greenland (though he doesn't draw the distinction precisely in the answer). Greenlanders want independence of Denmark (why, Lord only knows), but there's not many of them anyone needs to convince - 55,000 population. So it's not wrong for the Beeb to be raising the fact that he wants to buy Greenland, as that's been a consistent theme of his. And it's only the Beeb that I seek to defend here!! Panama and Canada are the worrying ones (to me). He can at the very least try overwhelming economic force with both of those without really needing too many around him to help that out. A few presidential diktats about tariffs etc and he could (and maybe will) do massive damage to both of those countries (as well as the US, in all likelihood). Talking about the Canadian border as an artificial border is so inflammatory. |

Of course if Canada did join US, its population is about 12% of current US population and my guess is it would vote democrat - could keep the republicans out of power for a while (my tongue is firmly in cheek - his rhetoric on all three is horrendous)

tongue in cheek but maybe correct. I saw arguments yesterday about it being a state (with votes) or territory a la Puerto Rico (and no votes) |

Borgen (now on Netflix) had a great episode on Greenland's sovereignty and whaling. Partly foreshadowed the current debacle, but the least believable thing was the mad US dictator saying he might invade... oh wait that's reality.
