Too Much Water
I would agree based on my grammar school experience.

I like how these debates slide into the usual stereotypes, if you go to a comprehensive then your from the local estate and will act like a dick. If you go to the grammar school then you will be middle class, will only meet nice kids like your own and none of them will push the boundaries. I'd say general ideas such as these are in themselves very good reasons for not having such a divide. Plenty of kids across all spectrums behave badly, my uncle works for a prestigious private school and the stuff he tells us about what they get up to is just as bad. The bottom line is that if you don't want your academically gifted daughter to not fall pregnant then you teach her about sex and contraception. |

Shadowless Formless Legs
I can say with absolute certainty that there was no chance that any girls at the grammar school that I went to ever fell pregnant

Well, I started this subject, so I'd better reply. I would suggest that teen mothers know all about sex and contraception. What they lack is any kind of ambition. |

Same sex schools definitely make pregnancy a lot more challenging.

I went to a good comprehensive for secondary and then a grammar for 6th form. Didn't see any difference in the standard of facilities or teaching.

Cheg, i dont think many children of teenage mothers are actually conceived at school. And Tony, they do have ambitions; they just aren't quite so orthodox. One of the reasons schools were moved away from the unilateral LEA control of the 70's was to. Decreases the political interference and ideological control. |

I wonder whether comprehensive education has given working class children more social mobility or less.

I know its in the guardian, but this says that even Sweden privatise some aspects of their education system. And to great effect. Apparently. theguardian.com |
