On NYD 2019 - a friend of mine ran ~5 miles to the first (09:00) event, set a new course record, ran ~3 miles to the 10:30 event, set a new course record there, then ran ~4 miles home. (It looks like both records still stand)

2 or 3 years ago, Haldon (a Forestry England place) was overrun. I think parking marshals were turning people away, with queues out the gate and up the narrow road blocking non-parkrunners and causing problems.
It’s a shame no more doubles, and I’ve done 2 or 3 I think, but I can understand it.

I don’t know if it was ever an official policy but I remember hearing or reading a desire of parkrun for its runners to try and walk, run or cycle to parkrun. And that was in the days when there were far fewer events. Encouraging doubles wouldn’t quite fit with that ideology.

BK brighter days ahead
Last NYD was chaotic for many ‘second’ events. With the greater number of events within close proximity locally participants from up to 3 other events all regrouped at our local.
Pleased that common sense prevailed and the correct decision made. It also avoided undue pressure being put on local ED / RD by runners to create a double situation.
If people really want a longer run on NYD or any other for that matter there is nothing preventing them - OH runs a monthly marathon route that links up three local events and could easily adapt to include two more.

Fragile Do Not Bend
One of the events I went to for a NYD double had (at a rough guess) around 4 times their usual attendance, I think it was the first NYD event they has done. I think the numbers took them by surprise as the finish funnel wasn’t long enough and the queue for tokens backed up over the finish line.
I wouldn’t have been surprised if they had got a few complaints (not from me) as the queue added extra time to the results. I had a minute’s wait to cross the line.

I did Eastville parkrun in Bristol on NYD in 2019. I'm sad to say I was one of these double baggers, I hot footed it from Ashton Court. Safe to say they were overrun. There were almost 1000 there, twice as much as the previous weeks. I remember queuing before the finish line because the queue in the funnel was so bad. I truly felt for the volunteers that day and vowed never to do a double again.

Fields & fountain, moor & mountain
Sounds like doubles are like free t shirts, only sustainable when numbers are relatively small.

Does anyone remember the "longest parkrun" idea? I think the last time it happened was in 2013. The idea was that you run as many parkrun courses as possible on the Sunday after the longest day of the year. A few friends did it in SE London and managed seven, finishing with ours.

Yes some friends of mine did that - it was six, I think including Basingstoke, Frimley, Woodley, Reading and two others I can't remember. I only did two of the events - six was too many for me, but it was a nice idea.
I have done a few New Year's Day doubles and it is a shame to lose the option, but I understand why. Maybe with covid and reduced attendances it wouldn't have been the same issue this year, but who knows. I've thought that parkrun could allow a Boxing Day option for the parkruns that can't do Christmas Day runs, eg all the NT and Forestry England venues. It would probably be easier to find volunteers on Boxing Day, too.
